Great idea.Nov 30, 2010
By AWBoater I gave this item 4 stars rather than 5 because there were no instructions. That was not an issue with me, but others might find that a problem.
I recently upgraded my 320Gb hard disk in my laptop to a 500Gb disk, and so I had a perfectly good 7200RPM 320Gb WD Scorpio Black hard disk just lying around. When I ran across this case, I figured what-the-heck, might as well have another portable hard drive...
The drive enclosure comes with 2 USB connectors in case you need additional power for the hard drive, but I found with my drive it was not needed. The case is a nice anodized red aluminum, and as is typical with these drive cases, the ones made of aluminum sink enough heat from the drive that overheating is not an issue.
I plan on using this drive for an additional backup of my photos. I wish this was a ruggedized drive; it isn't, so I don't plan on taking it on the road a lot. Its also a slightly larger size than the typical WD Passport drives (it's 5 1/8" x 3 1/8" x 1/2"), so the drive enclosure is a bit too tall to fit custom cases for WD Passport drives.
However, the cool thing is that the drive fits into a Pelican 1020 case almost perfectly! Its exactly the right dimension for the length and width, and even though there is a bit of height to the Pelican case, the drive has to be press-fit just a bit, but it holds the drive in place without it moving around.
There is a LED, mini-USB port, and a pushbutton switch on the side of the case. Without instructions, I have no idea what the switch is for as it has no function. However, when I went to the Transcend website, it appears the switch is for a one-button copy feature. I don't normally use those features anyway. The StoreJet is available as both an empty enclosure or one with a drive pre-installed in it, and I did see where there were software downloads available for StoreJet devices, so perhaps downloading a driver will add the one-button feature.
But as I said, I never use those features anyway, so having a non-functioning button is OK. Otherwise, it works great with both Win 7 without having to download the driver. The Device Manager in Windows recognizes the drive as a Transcend Storejet, not a WD drive, so if you are using the drive with Vista or XP, you may need to download the driver from Transcend's website.
