4Nice little case, couldn't be more compact, but no shock protection.Oct 09, 2008
By A. Tubesing
This is a very nicely built hard drive enclosure. I bought it to make use of a spare hard drive and it works great. It came with no instructions for how to insert the hard drive but it was extremely simple. Remove two screws, plug end cap into hard drive, insert into body, replace two screws. Couldn't be easier. It runs fine on my USB port with a single cable, so you may not need to use two ports.

I plugged it in and it self-installed in XP with no formatting or drivers needed. It comes with a CD of software which is for file/backup management, but to be honest I've never had cheapo software that comes with hardware like this be the slightest bit trustworthy, so I'm not even going to try it.

The hard drive fits exactly inside it with no space to spare, so this enclosure is as small as it can possibly be. One possible downside is that this offers no room for padding inside, so I am afraid there is little or no shock protection. It literally slides metal on metal going in. It also has a slippery metal exterior. Perhaps these two traits are not a good combination. Furthermore it does not come with any kind of case, not even a cheap slip cover. I think I'll shop for a neoprene sock of some sort to offer a little padding.

Aside from the padding concern it seems to be a great product. Functionality is excellent. Ease of installation and use is ideal. Cosmetics are quite nice.

UPDATE:
I just found another fantastic use for this product! My wife's laptop just experienced a fatal boot error and would not start up. So I removed her hard drive from the computer and put it in this enclosure. I easily retrieved all her data from the hard disk, and now I can start over rebuilding the operating system without worry of losing her files. What a great item this is. Super handy data recovery tool!

5Simple, Slick, Slim and AwesomeAug 20, 2011

My requirement was a slim enclousre which runs my 7200 drive. I am using it with WD3200BJKT Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Black with Free Fall Sensor SATA 7200 RPM hard drive. It runs fine with single usb port.

Initially I bought Eagle Tech tool less enclosure (mainly because of its esata feature) which is a good enclosure but not the one I was looking for, it is thick and the mesh design mean more dirt and danger of spilling something onto it. The closing hinge is also not very solid and moves even after closing the drive. Don't take me wrong it is a good enclosure if you want to use your drive more as a network drive and doesn't carry it more often. I returned it.

Then I came across this one. The blue color is worth spending more bucks (silver is cheap). The led does not glow like sun (in most other enclosures it does). LED is very soothing to the eyes. It is made of aluminium accept the connectors which are made of plastic. So the enclosure works as heat sink. I have copied around 100GB of data and it gets warm only not very hot which is a good sign.

As far as shock protection is concerned I am using a hard drive which has built in mechanism for drop protection. I am also using another cheaper enclosure for my older drive and I have dropped it couple of times and it is working fine without any bad sectors in it. So the drives these days are strong enough to handle minor bumps and occasional drops.

All in all this is an excellent enclosure for anyone who is looking for a simple, slim and slick enclosure with a touch of wow factor in it.

4Great Device, One huge flawNov 12, 2009

I think this is a great little device for someone who wants a compact external drive. I use it to transfer files from my PC to my Mac and to back up my Mac and have not had any problems with it to this point. My one piece of criticism is that there is no where for the hard-drive to get some air which causes the case to get very hot so I wouldn't advise using this for an extended amount of time.
