Seriously? $6 *each* for a single smushed vanilla bean!? You can't even tell if it's fresh! The days when vanilla beans were a luxury ingredient are over, people. Go over to eBay where you can buy 20 ORGANIC beans for less than $10. I once bought a 1/2 lb. (yes, POUND) of lovely, fresh, fragrant beans for around $20 and gave them away by the handful to friends and family. They looked like they just won the lottery! With most of my leftovers, I made a big ol' jar of vanilla extract, some of which got bottled into little jars and given away to friends who don't know how to use actual vanilla beans. Win/win for everyone!
(**Please note: I'm in no way affiliated with any vanilla sellers on eBay or elsewhere; I just don't like to see people getting ripped off!) :D
