Multiple FireWire 400 FailuresJan 28, 2009

"Tech Freak"
I needed another large capacity external hard drive that was both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 compatible. The SimpleTech PRO1000Q looked to fit the bill perfectly.
Unfortunately, when the drive arrived I found that, while the USB interface worked fine the drive refused to mount at all using FireWire 400. I tried it on multiple machines (PC and Mac) that all have no difficulty mounting other large FireWire drives. I returned the drive to Amazon (which was fast and hassle-free!) for a replacement, only to find that the second drive had the same issue. Again, this was on multiple platforms where I regularly mount FireWire drives of this size.
I didn't try the FireWire 800 or eSATA ports on either drive, so I can't comment on them one way or the other.
I'm disappointed, as this drive promised to be exactly what I was looking for and for a great price.

Great drive, great priceJan 09, 2009
By Benjamin Hollander I'm using this drive with Time Machine and it has worked very well. I have had a couple instances where I plugged it in, turned it on and it would not mount. There is a chance that it was the computer but If I unplugged it and plugged it back in it would mount and backup fine. It hasn't done this to me in a few weeks now, since 10.5.6 actually.... You can have the drive upright or using the included rubber thingies it can lay on it's side, I liked having the choice. It's Firewire 800, so once I get a firewire 800 cable I can get those speeds. That's really my only problem, it did not come with a firewire 800 cable.

Close but no cigarFeb 08, 2009
By C. Borchert Got good tech review from Tom's Hardware. Quiet drive. Quad interface has you covered. Drive hangs (non-responsive) 1-2 times per week and requires restart. Tech support and Pre-sales support stinks.

Used as a primary drive on a newer iMac via Firewire and worked fine!May 20, 2010
By Dennis A. Amith (kndy) I recently purchased the Hitachi SimpleTech Pro Drive 1 TB external hard drive immediately after my main drive inside my iMac received S.M.A.R.T. errors. The reason why I purchased this is because it is from Hitachi (note: The drive says "SimpleTech by Fabrik" inside the box but says Hitachi on the outside box) and having used so many drives in the past, I needed A) a TB drive B) Quick speed in transfers C) must have a USB 2.0 and Firewire drive D) Price - I purchased it for under a $100.
I've read some of the complaints from other reviewers who have iMac's but once of the things I had to do was utilize my secondary backup (or you can use your MAC OS X disc) to bring up disk utility and you need to reformat (erase) your hard drive to Mac OS Journal (Extended). After doing this, the drive was then detected on my iMac.
I then installed Snow Leopard on the new TB drive and since then, I have had no problems with the drive. I will say that it does make a bit of noise when being accessed but I'm cool with that for now (I still plan to replace my drive inside my Mac). I have done several GB of transfers (mainly my Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and 3D work work plus video projects) from my secondary backup drive to the new TB drive and things have transferred quite quickly.
In terms of heat, I have other external drives that get scorching hot overtime but this Pro Drive is a bit warm after 10-13 hours on per day but never super hot.
But so far, I have had only a positive experience. Bare in mind, I have not tried video games on this drive, although I plan to buy a second ProDrive for my PC strictly for the games and I'll see how that goes and will update this review later. But for my iMac and using this as a primary drive, everything has worked fine thus far and will definitely purchase another one for the iMac as a time machine backup.

complete lossNov 22, 2009
By Peter A. Stark I bought two 1 TB SimpleTech Pro Drives. I ran each for two weeks, one after the other. Each one in turn stopped being recognized by my iMac, though it turned out eventually that the data was intact if inaccessible.
After Drive #1 suddenly stopped mouting, Drive #1 was unplugged and was not used while I tried Drive #2. Later, when I tried to reconnect Drive #1, it would not mount, whether connected by FireWire 400, FireWire 800, or USB 2. I did not try eSATA.
Then Drive #2 failed exactly the same way. I tried reconnecting Drive #1 and after 24 hours of connection, it suddenly was recognized again, and I could retrieve some data. Then it failed again.
Drive #1 is a total loss, for all practical purposes. In 48 hours of connection, it mounted for a total of 10 minutes, but if one clicks on it to access data, it dismounts.
I have owned these two drives for less than a month.
I would never buy SimpleTech products again.
