Yes, it really DOES arrive broken... :-(Mar 23, 2008
By Dave Savage Yes, it DID arrive broken. Yes, I DID read the reviews ahead of time, and yes I DID see that many other people were receiving this item "dead on arrival..." but there were those two 5-star ratings of people who had received them in working order and the price just couldn't be beat! I decided to take a gamble... are you a gambler? If so, you can give it a try. This external drive didn't just come in a non-working state, it actually LOOKED broken when I took it out of the box. The outside plastic case had become separated from the actual mechanism inside, so all the plug receptacles (USB, power, etc,) no longer were visible through the appropriate holes in the case. It was completely unusable. Are YOU feeling lucky? Then give it a try - but I don't recommend it. Kudos to Amazon for their amazing return process! Just a few clicks on their website and I was able to print out a bar code that I taped to the original box, which I left on my porch and UPS came by without a special call from me and just picked it up the next business day with no questions asked. Amazon rules!

i have about ten hard drives. im a tech geek and this is easily my favorite. i picked it because of the RAID capabilities... this one is for storing important files so i wanted something that was redundant. this thing is fast, very quiet!, and stays cooler than all of my other drives! go simpletech!
buy it now... for less than $250 it is a STEAL

Forget it!Mar 07, 2008
By Robert L. Gray Received the 1TB drive unit and it worked fine for the first 6 days then it was no longer acknowledged by any of my three computers. A call to Tech Support got a simple "it must be broke, send it back." That is what I did and then ordered another model from Cavalry and it has been working fine.

4 stars because first one I ordered gave a "USB device not recognized" error and ad to be returned.
Second arrived and was recognized but did not have any softare installed. I called customer support and they e-mailed me the software to downlaod. I then backed up all of my files (around 30GB) which was around 1.5 hours with the USB connection.
3 weeks later my system was wrecked by an IT specialist from my company and had to be re-imaged. Entire internal hard drive cleared.
Sickenng feeling went away as the restore function completely replaced all of my files to original look and feel before the crash. On;y data lost was a few photos that I had not backed up.
Job well done. 4 stars (not five) for the start up flail.

THUMB RULE: Cheap Drive leads to too much headache and wasted time :)Feb 24, 2008
By ShyGuyCalif I have had few drives (maxtor, hitachi etc) crash on me lately leading to frustration on loss of important data (family photos, important documents etc). Not to forget that wife has been furious of my computer systems inability to keep data safe.
Hence when I saw this drive with RAID 1. I was very happy initially. I bought it for $249 at OM immiediately. Price was high for my budget but I thought it will be worth if I can effectively backup the data in future. Moreover I had heard that it contains 2 Maxtor 500GB drives inside. Not bad!
I went home and opened the drive. There was some noise inside as if some screw was loose. Most people would have noticed this. Well, no way to fix this as opening would void the warranty. I decided to live with it. Also the instruction provided with the drive as non-existant. So you will feel lost if you are planning to use it as primary drive with OS or just a backup. I plugged the drive in but none of the harddisks were showing. I decided to format the drive and got error that sectors were beyond the repair. Urgh!!
I took the 2nd drive to another OM and exchanged it. I opened the 2nd drive at home. This drive also had similar noice inside as if some screw has lying loose. I saw that the entire controller board was misalligned and because of this there was no way to put power or USB cable... again rendering the drive useless. Urgh!! Well I had no choice but to return it back too. Too much waste of time going up and down to store. Moreover felt stupid expalining the cashier the problem with this drive.
Pros: Cheap RAID Drive Cons: 1. Body/Case is very cheap quality. You got to be careful not to damage the maxtor drives inside because of this. 2. The hardware RAID controller is very poor quality so effectively rendering the RAID funcationality useless.
Hence I learnt my thumb rule that "Cheap Drive leads to too much headache and wasted time". I am currently saving my money but eagerly waiting for a good RAID 1 Drive to buy.
