4excellent... but not as sublime as the original recipeMay 30, 2009

Why stroopwafels are a tough-to-find specialty/gourmet item (in the U.S.) is a mystery to me, as these things are really good. For the uninitiated, stroopwafels are a waffle-caramel-waffle sandwich cookie, using flat waffles (as in waffle cones for ice cream). At room temperature the caramel is medium-soft, but the serving suggestion is to warm it up, for example by putting one on the rim of a cup containing steaming hot cup of coffee or tea, which softens up the caramel to a luxuriously gooey state.

I would have given Shady Maple Farms 5 stars without hesitation... until the day I tried them side-by-side against a Gouda's Gilde stroopwafel (sadly not yet available on Amazon... hope this changes), hand-delivered via a flight from Amsterdam. The Shady Maple Farms product uses no butter or eggs while Gouda's Gilde uses both eggs and a plenty of butter (23% by weight). While some (like vegans) may consider this a plus for Shady Maple Farms, for those of us who judge by taste alone, it was a definite minus; the Gouda's Gilde stroopwafel had undeniably more depth/richness of flavor, and the cookie texture had a satisfying crispiness that the Shady Maple Farms lacks. And despite using no butter, the Shady Maple Farms product somehow has 50% more fat (per ounce).

Vegans and those who particularly like the flavor of maple sugar, or want to support Quebecois maple farmers, should have no hesitation picking up the Shady Maple Farms stroopwafels. As for the rest of us -- despite not quite stacking up to the original recipe, the Shady Maple Farms stroopwafel is nevertheless quite delicious, and the only stroopwafel available on Amazon Prime for now.

3DisappointingApr 06, 2010

I went to Holland in 2009 and fell in love with the stroopwafel. The original is so good that anyone who has had one can understand why I went off in search of them when I got back to the states. I found mini ones at World Market, but they are seasonal and unpredictable.

When I found these on amazon I was hopeful. They get mostly good reviews and it seemed like maybe I had found a reliable source of stroopwafels! They are even organic, a big plus.

They arrived, all 6 boxes and I immediately ate one. It's hard to explain how they are wrong, but I think the main problem is in the cookie. They are "vegan" (I have to use the term loosely, they do contain honey), and that lack of milk or eggs in the cookie recipe makes them lacking. I tried heating them up in the microwave! That helped a little, but it was actually hard to get them to a good temperature without heating them up to the point that they totally lose their shape. And unlike the ones from Holland, putting these over a cup of coffee or tea didn't seem to melt them much at all.

I thought maybe I am just biased since I know what the real thing is suppose to taste like. I shared them with coworkers and have kept a box at work to share. Not one person has asked for another cookie, and this is from my coworkers who have no problem daily raiding my candy jar.

All in all, the filling is a little off, soaks into the cookie in an unappetizing way and the cookie isn't great either. I've given most of the remaining boxes away to food drives. They aren't exactly bad, but they aren't exciting.

5Surprisingly DeliciousJul 23, 2007

These Syrup Waffles are amazing. They are made in Holland and they have nothing less than the traditional ones with eggs and butter. These are 100% Vegan, they have no cholesterol, no trans fat, and they are 100% organic! The flavor is awesome and the texture sublime. Shady Maple Farms is a company I really respect for their philosophy and their products are all amazingly good. It looks like it's becoming harder and harder to find them, I really hope they won't discontinue them...

4These Honey & Maple ones are great, but the Maple ones are even better!Aug 07, 2008

It's a shame Amazon.com only sells the Honey & Maple stroopwafels from Shady Maple Farms. The Maple ones are even more awesome --- hands down my favorite packaged cookie! This Honey & Maple one is a close second favorite.

5Good - not addictive but tastyMar 21, 2009

A good sweet snack. Its maple taste made it less addictive but still tasty treat for a sweet tooth. I dont know, but i expected it to be crunchy like a wafer but it was more sticky with maple syrup i believe in between waffles. I want cruncy and crispy.
