2Adorable tins, Pleasant flavor, Cause of an upset stomachDec 04, 2006
By Sarah Prostar "Prostar"
The tins these mints come in are very cute. I enjoyed the flavor, I found Delicate Pear to be pleasant although it is unique. The taste is extremely mild yet refreshing. As the flavor was so subtle, I took to chewing them which was a very bad idea. Something about the Delicate Pear mints were addictive and while deeply engrossed on a project on the computer I must have eaten 15-20 mints, over the course of 2 hours. About 4 hours later I had painful cramping, gas, diarrhea. I didn't suspect the mint had anything to do with this, until I repeated the experience, a few days later and had identical symptoms. I stopped eating the mints and haven't had this problems since.

The two sweeteners for this product are Sorbitol and Xylitol. After some research it looks like the culprit for my stomach upset was likely Sorbitol. This sweeteners is used in many cough syrups and while eating 3 mints a day will probably not cause you any grief. In large enough quantities (many studies say 40 grams will cause this effect but in my case it was much, much less) Sorbitol is known to cause extreme gas, bloating and intestinal upset. Also a note to diabetics: Blindness and loss of extremities (usually feet) in diabetics is attributed to the body's build up of Sorbitol, which the body makes in very small quantities naturally and has difficulty flushing out. I do not have diabetes but I am somewhat chemically sensitive.

I doubt if the average person eats 3 or 4 mints a day they are likely to develop ANY symptoms, but I am surprised that a company with what looks like it maintains high values for a natural product (touting the benefits of Green Teas) would use Sorbitol as a sweetener. The other sweetener Xylitol, after much testing and use, is not know to have any side effect. Xylitol is the principle sweetener used in chewing gum and many candies in Europe. There is even a dental treatment using Xylitol, as it is know to help the body dispel bacteria, including plaque.[...]

Taste clean. When I crave for sweets in the late afternoon, I grab this instead.

3Different Formula?Sep 12, 2007
By Adriana
I recently purchased these online after having enjoyed the tin I got at a Tea shop. The mints were different!!! It was like the company used a different formula. One reviewer mentions the ability to chew the mints... I wasn't able to chew them anymore as they were a lot harder and less grainy. I am trying to like them despite them not meeting my original expectations, but we will see if I can adjust.

5Mints for GrownupsAug 09, 2007
By S. Potter
My wife paid a lot more than the Amazon price for a tin of these mints at a new age type store. I was skeptical about them up until I put one in my mouth. The pear and tea flavors work extremely well together. Of course, green tea is something I enjoy. Those who do not enjoy the somewhat vegetal flavor of sencha may not like these mints.

Green tea is not a highly caffeinated beverage. The mild green tea caffeine kick these mints deliver is noticeable but not particularly strong. I like that. Just don't overdo it. One tin of these leaf shaped morsels should last some time.

Very healthy and only 3 mints are = 1 cup of green tea... Great taste too.
