Super deal and great to have on handFeb 27, 2009

A staple for any curry loving household. This 6-pack of very generously sized containers is a great deal. Superb flavor. Now I can add "a little extra" without fear of draining an entire (and rather costly) supermarket-procured jar of the stuff!

After moving from Berkeley to Palo Alto, I find myself less likely to stop by the Indian grocery and pick up some more spices. This garam is good stuff, as is their tandoori masala - you can just dump a bunch of it in your curry and bump up the taste. mmmm.

By Shuffalufagus Disclaimer - I am aware that there is no replacement or substitution for freshly ground spices, and hand prepared garam masala from a handed down recipe, etc. That being said, here are my main comments about this item:
1. The flavors work very well and this product has an excellent blend of fragrant spices. I have used this in a butter chicken recipe, vegetable recipes, and to add a little kick or pick me up to normal dishes. A little goes a long way! 2. The price is very reasonable, and I don't think I could have made this for less money (if I bought the spices from the local supermart) - and to be honest, I don't have a dedicated spice grinder at home. :) 3. Quantity - the producers give you a substantial amount of the spice mix in each container, especially for what I think is a really low price. Take advantage of this!
In a lot of indian, pakastani and sri lankan recipes, garam masala is a popular ingredient, so it is good to have this on hand and make the initial investment in the spice. For years, what has stopped me from really getting involved in cooking these types of cuisine is the sometimes insane amount of spices they require - many of which I don't have readily on hand. Having this removes a great deal of that pressure of not having spices. After receiving this, I went to the supermart and bought some turmeric, cumin and cardamon (sp?) and I was all set. :)

While it's more authentic, and probably has better taste to mix and grind the spices as you use them, this isn't always practical, especially if your meals range over a lot of different cuisines.
This garam is very nice, and works well for everything I've made, very tasty.
