An acquired taste...Nov 11, 2009
By Michael G. Lustig Let me start by saying these are not for everybody. In fact, my personal experience is that most non-Indian people don't like them at all. I fall into a different category because I love Indian pickles (AKA achar). Indian food is about variety and these pickles certainly hold up their end of the bargain.
If you've never tried achar, don't buy these until you try a single bottle first. I would describe the taste as astringent, hot and salty -- in that order. If I haven't scared you off yet then go for it. You might actually acquire a taste for them too. Keep in mind that a little goes a loooong way. A typical serving is a tablespoon or two maximum.
BTW: It took me six months of eating Indian food daily before I started to like achar -- but that's another story.
