Happy with the product.Nov 02, 2010
By WendyB I purchased this type (glycerite, but different brand) Stevia at a local health food grocery store in a 2 oz bottle with a dropper for almost $9. When it was almost empty, I decided to try this 8 oz bottle instead since it was a better value and had good reviews. At first, I was disappointed because it was so thick, I couldn't get the 'mix' right. It was either way too sweet or not enough because it was much thicker than the one I had been using and didn't have a 'dropper', just a hole that you squeezed drops from. So I decide to try diluting it with water and using it in my dropper bottle. Great idea for me because it works (for me) and extends the use of this Stevia. I fill the 2 oz bottle to about 2/3 to 3/4 with the Now Foods Stevia and then add water. I shake it up good before I use it and it works great. I use about 8 drops per cup of coffee and it's just as I like it. You could probably have just used 2 or 3 drops of the regular Now Foods Stevia - undiluted - but I like it better this way. Hope this helps anyone else who had this same situation.

375 SERVINGS @ 5 DROPS PER SERVING = CONVENIENCE & VALUE + GLYCERITE MEANS 'ALCOHOL FREE'Jul 14, 2006

IN A NUTSHELL: 'NO ALCOHOL'
GLYCERITE RATHER THAN ALCOHOL IS USED TO EXTRACT THE STEVIA INTO TINCTURE FORM!
EXCELLENT SUGAR SUBSTITUTE HAS HEALTH BENEFITS + NO WARNINGS,
This "NOW Foods Stevia Liquid Extract 2 Oz" is good stuff, and is among the most economical and user-friendly ways to buy Stevia.
WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT:
Sweeter than sugar, that's what Stevia is, but that's not all.
Stevia has been shown to lower blood sugar levels in research involving healthy adults by increasing the secretion of insulin making Stevia useful for diabetics.
It also improves digestion and gastrointestinal function, and is useful for upset stomachs and to reduce gas and stomach acidity. Several recent studies have shown that it may improve the heart's muscle tone and promote the body's water loss. These properties are thought to contribute to lower blood pressure.
Stevia also has antiviral, antimicrobial and antibacterial characteristics. It's used for relieving bleeding gums, sore throats and cold sores in South America and Japan. Stevia has been shown to inhibit plaque formation and bacterial growth causing gum disease and tooth decay, and will not cause cavities. It may even reduce cravings for sweets which coupled with its lack of calories may be helpful in weight loss.
ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE SUGGESTS EVEN MORE:
There is anecdotal evidence that Stevia is good for skin problems like acne, cold sores, dermatitis and eczema, and may speed up the healing of cuts and scratches. There have even been reports that Stevia may be useful as a contraceptive, but that has not yet been substantiated by research.
FDA APPROVAL TO BE SOLD AS A FOOD SUPPLEMENT -- NOT A SWEETENER
Most of all, Stevia, unlike the artificial sweeteners we put in everything from soda to psyllium does not come with any health warnings from the FDA, and it will probably do you no harm. However, Stevia has not been approved to be sold as a sweetener even though it is a NATURAL SWEETENER LIKE SUGAR. Nevertheless, Stevia has been approved [since 1994] to be sold as a dietary supplement in the United States.
AFTER ALL THE SMOKE HAS CLEARED THIS IS FOOD - USE IT BY EATING IT!
Stevia can be substituted for sugar. It is a bit different tasting if one is use to sugar. I use it on many things where I can eliminate large amounts of honey and/or sugar such as;
1]- Herbal Tea, instead of sugar or honey.
2]- In multi-grain hot cereal, when you need to sweeten it, Stevia saves me a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of sugar per large bowl. In this case I just add about a teaspoon of honey and 1/8 teaspoon of stevia for the same effect. Stevia is much sweeter than sugar so use about 1/10th as much in place of sugar.
3]- Iced Tea.
MEDICINALLY SPEAKING:
A standardized extract of 57 mg. containing 85% "steviocides" in a beverage, is what Doctor James A. Duke, suggests in his famous, "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook".
ABOUT FORMS AND BRANDS: THIS IS THE "NOW" BRAND IN 'GLYCERITE' NOT 'ALCOHOL' DROPS [2 0Z.]
This particular form is ideal for when you are out, on vacation or at a resturant. In drops, it is possible to mix the stevia into whatever you are sweetening with just a turn of a spoon.
Also, according to "NOWFOODS.COM" this 2 ounce liquid extract will provide 375 servings of Stevia at 5 drops per serving, which is actually a pretty accurate statement! This differs slightly from the standard Stevia extract which yields 461 servings based on just 4 drops per serving. This decrease in yield is probably due to the lower efficiency of glycerite versus alcohol as an extract medium. However, this is 'ALCOHOL FREE', which is important to me and may also be to you.
For most applications, when we don't have the liquid extract, we prefer Stevia in powder over the packets, as we can better measure, and use what we need for each individual use. Purchase Stevia in whatever form you are most comfortable using.
This "NOW" brand Stevia LIQUID EXTRACT [glycerite], 2 oz., is an excellent product and a terrific value. Not having been steeped in alcohol, is a real plus if you are giving this to children or wish to avoid alcohol, although just a trace is still present.
BOTTOM LINE:
"Planetary Formulas Stevia Powder 3.5 oz." is also excellent and it comes in a liquid as well. "Now" and "Nature's Way" are both excellent too, and have Stevia in powder, liquid and packets for convenient use. Any of the above choices are excellent, and we have used them all at one time or another, over the past 3-4 years on a daily basis.
In any event, Stevia in any form is an excellent, and healthier choice than virtually any other sweetener.

If you are buying this hoping this is calorie free - it is notFeb 01, 2011
By IM Neither does a bottle say so to be fair
In the "other ingredients" we have alcohol (7 calories per gram, higher than sugars) and glycerin (4 calories per gram, same as sugars).
Taste is decent and you do need way less amount that you would use of sugar, so it is still a big reduction in carbs and calories.
I found that if I use the suggested 5 drops - it is not enough to sweeten my coffee. It's more like 10+ drops for me.
Just don't assume that if the product has stevia (which indeed is a calorie free substance), then this product as a whole must be a calorie free substance.
I am going to try other brands to see if they are indeed calorie-free as they claim.
That's all folks :-)

Like honey...Apr 06, 2011

I got this because I am on the HCG diet and it recommends this as a sugar/sweetener substitute. I LOVE IT! There's no aftertaste (which I figured there would be) and it works great in black tea and green tea (I don't drink coffee, so you're on your own with that one.)

Taste just as good as the other brand, yet cheaperNov 08, 2008
By Brian Z. I am currently using this, mostly use it for making coffee, but also use it to make ice tea and Lemonade. For ice tea, just buy some regular tea bags (maybe $1 for 100 of them), heat them in a huge pot, let them cool down, add the stevia. Stevia can be added to hot or cold, it doesnt matter. For lemonaide, even simpler, heat a big pot of water, squeeze lemons and then let cool, add stevia. Save yourself hundreds on drinks.
