By nowann This is as good as you will probably find for packaged udon. The broth is light enough I don't hesitate to drink it all down. There are small tempura and vegetable pieces that rehydrate. You prepare the bowl by adding hot water to the noodles, draining the water with the lid provided (has holes to allow water to drain), then refill with water and let it sit for a few minutes with the included seasonings. Noodles are nice and thick, not mushy.

Almost restaurant qualityMar 21, 2010

"Squeek!"
Each bowl contains three packets. There's a large pouch containing pliable, "fresh" udon noodles; this isn't your typical hard, dried ramen brick. There's also a liquid soup packet (no powdered soup here!) and a foil packet labeled "flake". There's also a plastic lid with holes along the edge; these will come into play later.
The preparation instructions are a bit unusual, if you're accustomed to making instant ramen. First you open the noodle pouch and add them to the bowl, then you fill it with boiling water, cover and wait 2 minutes. Then you drain off the water through the holes in the lid. Finally you add the contents of the soup and flake packets, add more boiling water, cover and wait another minute.
This stuff is totally unlike any cup or bowl noodle I've ever had. The broth is dark brown and quite rich, very slightly sweet, with the flavor of soy sauce and just a wee hint of fish. Unlike the other Nong Shim products I've had in the past, this soup isn't spicy. The noodles are firm and slightly chewy and are nearly restaurant quality. They tasted fresh. The soup is full of huge pieces of wheat dumplings, green onion, seaweed, surimi (krab) and red pepper. There's also quite a lot of it; it was quite filling for me, and I'm usually a big eater.
If you have allergies, this product contains wheat, bonito, pollack, soy, anchovy, tuna and cuttlefish and is manufactured in a plant that also processes mollusks.
At more than $2 a bowl (Costco price), it's significantly more expensive than ramen, but you've never seen ramen or even canned soup that looked (or tasted) anywhere as good as this. You'd swear this was takeout from a Japanese restaurant.

Great noodles!May 26, 2009
By Allen Although I'm not much of a udon fan, these noodles really taste good. It's more pricey than any instant noodles I would buy on a regular basis, but they truly taste authentic to me. Not many Japanese restaurants I go to can mimic such a surprisingly fulfilling flavor.
Bottom line: A great alternative to your regular Nissin or Marachun brand noodles but at a price.

Best instant udon money can buyDec 20, 2010

First, the "negative." There are one or two reviews floating around that complains of fishy smell. Those reviewers don't seem know how to appreciate a good udon; do some research before you purchase things out of ignorance. I'd suggest you read others' comments that go with those reviews. The following comment is very helpful if you're apprehensive of the smell: http://www.amazon.com/review/R25CSJ1DJJQ67M/ref=cm_cr_rev_detmd_pl?ie=UTF8&cdMsgNo=1&cdPage=1&asin=B000LQNKAA&store=grocery&cdSort=oldest&cdMsgID=Mx2TRH6Z2BXJ8HQ#Mx2TRH6Z2BXJ8HQ
Now on to the positives. If you want a hot, satisfying meal but can't get away from your desk at lunch or are not in the mood to slave over the stove for a meal, this is udon bowl is an excellent choice for you. Very easy to make: (1) remove the noodles from the package and place them in the bowl; remove the remaining ingredients; (2) pour boiling water and wait 2 minutes; (3) drain the water using the holes in the lid; (4) add the remaining ingredients and boiling water again; (4) wait 1 more minute and enjoy the delicious smell; and finally (5) consume a bowl of fresh-tasting udon noodles swimming in a delectable broth. As others have mentioned, the broth is light enough to drink; good to the last drop.
I bought these at a wholesale store, so the price was right. It is more expensive than Top Ramen, but you will get your money's worth.

Delicious!Aug 17, 2010

This soup is very tasty and easy to make in a very short period of time. It is far better than any dried soup mix. The size is larger than most soup mixes. I strongly suggest trying Nong Shim Udon Bowl Noodle Soup.
