5E260dn for home useApr 27, 2009
By Sanford Imhoff
Just a comment on the paper jam light when using manual feed. If you press the red 'X' button when the jam light appears it clears the light and you can then print the next whatever. Lexmark's commercial grade lasers function the same way in that each page/envelope has to be cleared when using manual feed. It isn't a defect..its just the way the manual feed works.

I was an unfortunate owner of the infamous HP P2015dn and went through two formatter boards before giving up on it and moving on to the E260dn.

I haven't had the printer long enough to comment on its longevity but I can say this is a superior printer to the HP (all HP problems aside). Faster to first print, faster printing sheet for sheet, much better duplexing and better software in general. Print quality is about the same. Both are quiet although the Lexmark is quicker to shut down its processing. The HP did have a better envelope/manual feed.

Now, for an embarrassing acknowledgment but also a statement on Lexmark service. It had been so long since I performed a firmware upgrade I forgot the printer must be connected through a USB cable (not network) in order to flash. So, trying to update through a network connection thoroughly messed things up. I contacted Lexmark customer service and was very impressed. Connected with tech support in about a minute. After trying different processes to see if the firmware could be salvaged they stated the printer would need to be exchanged for a new one. They willingly shipped the new printer to my place of work so I could sign for it and it arrived the following AM as promised. Lexmark's warranty on this printer is one year, next-day exchange.

Thus far, this is a printer I would highly recommend for home or small business use based on my experience. Understand the 'paper jam' light is a function of manual feed and not a defect per se.

3Mostly good but...Oct 26, 2009
By L. Graf "verbivore"
This printer is easy to set up and produces good quality print. I haven't had the other reviewers' problems with the manual feed of envelopes, and the Lexmark handles automatic paper feed with ease. One thing I don't like about it is that the on-off switch is in back rather than on the side. Given my computer set-up, this means an awkward stretch for me every time I turn the printer on or off.

The toner cartridge is easy to insert and remove, and the print it produces is sharp and dark and doesn't smudge. My main beef with the Lexmark lies with its voracious appetite for toner. At the default settings the cartridge gets used up in less than the advertised maximum 3500 pages -- not good if you regularly print a lot, often hundreds of pages a day, as I do.

However, you can ameliorate this problem by adjusting the settings. In Printer Preferences click on Print Quality, there click on Custom, and then slide the indicator arrow from 10 to at least 5, which in my experience provides a good sharp dark print. The quality will be acceptable for drafts even at 3 and the cartridge life will be greatly extended.

Overall it's a definite improvement over my ancient HP 2200 laser, and overall I think it was a good purchase. But keep these drawbacks in mind as you consider whether it will work for you.

Update, August 2011: Almost two years later and the printer is still going strong, still churning out lots of pages reliably for me. The only beef I have with it is that the warning light for changing the photoconductor kit blinks All. The. Time. even when I've just inserted a new, from the manufacturer kit.

4A great workhorse, but not perfectApr 19, 2009
By Robert Paxton
The good parts:
- Absolutely silent at idle, reasonably quiet in operation.
- FAST! Its warm-up time is very quick, documents come across the network very quickly, and the print speed is wonderful.
- Great main tray paper handling...no jams, and the duplexer works perfectly.
- Easy to set up. The wizard on the setup disc worked very well, and it's nice to be able to point your browser at the printer to get a complete status readout without wasting a page printing it out.

The bad part:
- The manual feed is worthless, as other reviewers have said. I'm currently hand-writing addresses on envelopes, which does not make me happy. The rollers grip and pull an envelope into the machine just fine, but then the paper jam light comes on and it's all over. My hope is a firmware update fixes it...someday...

* 9/18/09 UPDATE *
Still works perfectly as mentioned above, except for the manual feed - - which is still worthless. I'm still addressing envelopes by hand.

4Great printer... almostApr 09, 2009
By Robert E. Alexander
My previous printer was a Lexmark e210, an entry level laser. Compared to that, I'm delighted with the e260dn. I love its speed (the warm-up time is so much shorter than the e210), I love the network connection so that all my family's desktops and laptops can use it, and I love the double sided printing.

I leave it on 24/7. It uses 10 watts of electricity when idle - 50% more than a night light. I figure that's about $20/year.

My complaints are with the paper feed. First, I get frequent jams. Maybe I'm just not keeping the paper bin full enough, because that's where most jams happen. It's tolerable for a home office, but I wouldn't recommend it for a bigger business.

Second, the way the envelope feed works is that you send the print job to the printer, it displays a yellow light, then you put the envelope in. Having the envelope there before you send the job won't work. Again, that's OK in the home but not at a big office.

5Better than expectedAug 30, 2010
By J.W. "Jay"
Excellent printer. I wanted to write this review to respond to some concerns I've read about this printer elsewhere.

Very fast in printing large graphics files, and auto-duplexing is also very fast. It "wakes" from idle to print almost as fast as you hit the "print" button on your document.

Quality of print is great for both images and text. Very sharp, clean and crisp.

To save toner (which is not super cheap with this model), you may want to change the default settings to "Draft" 600dpi and set the toner darkness to "5" (out of 10). Even at that setting, text and images remain dark, sharp, clear. I don't anticipate printing with any other setting except in rare circumstances. To change the default settings for this printer after installing the software on you computer, go to Start > Settings > Printers > Lexmark e260dn > (right click) Properties, then click on Preferences, etc. You can also find reasonably priced toner cartridges if you hunt around a bit online.

(If you're technically savvy, there are a bunch of additional programming settings that you can make to this printer through various commands and setup options. Read the PDF user manual to learn about these. You can use the PDF manual to learn how to output a Printer Settings Configuration sheet (which is built into the printer), that has way more options on it than I know what to do with. I think you can fine-tune this machine for virtually any application, but it also works just fine out of the box.)

No paper jams! I've read that some people have had issues with this. So far, the machine appears to move paper without a problem, including paper and envelopes in the bypass tray.

It's absolutely silent when at idle, but is somewhat loud when printing. Not a big deal to me, since that was not the priority. (Someone wrote this printer is quiet. It is not quiet when printing.)

Build quality is excellent. It's clearly built to last. The design is not as high-tech or space-age as some other printers, but I wouldn't want that anyway. This printer has a very clean, professional, and business-like appearance. It is perfectly at home in any business setting, and it doesn't look like a piece of home audio equipment.

It's heavy, but that derives from the build quality.

Does not have wireless, but again, that wasn't the priority for me. Lexmark put the cost of this printer into quality laser printing components, not wireless. It does, however, offer almost every other kind of networking: ethernet, USB, and even an old-style Parallel printer port.

Auto-duplexing works great. Printer appears to hold the paper through the process with an iron grip: very solid and fast.

Bypass tray works great for hand feeding paper or envelopes. No paper jams so far. (Process on my printer works like this: First open the bypass door, insert your paper or envelope and let the printer "grab" it, THEN send your print job and watch your paper or envelope go through the machine.) If you print envelopes, it helps to open the rear output door so the envelope won't curl. Standard stuff.

Lexmark is a company that apparently does only one thing: make printers. Their printer drivers are often relied upon as industry standard printer drivers, and their printers are well-known business workhorses.

I bought this from a major retailer on sale for $150 and it was a steal (included 2 years free repair service). I also got an additional $50 off for bringing in a printer to recycle. End price: $110. Unbelievable, but it's still a good deal at $180 or more.
