 Works almost as promised.Mar 24, 2010

I bought this drive when I picked up a 2BigNetwork housing for cheap. It was cheap because it only had one drive, but two sleds.
Little did I know that LaCie's proprietary software that mounts this drive as both AFP and SMB disks had to be installed on an existing drive, and then copied over to the other before any of the system would work. The one drive I did have to begin with did not have this software, and I was left with a cool-looking brick.
Because I bought this LaCie-branded item, however, LaCie counted the whole product as under warranty, installed their OS, and had the whole thing up and running months after I initially had the problem (a week after they received it) at no charge to me - not even shipping.
Since then, the AFP directory has been damaged a few times when my home lost power. Their solution is simple enough, and i didn't loose any data.
However, their solution did not work after we last moved, and now only the SMB drive image actually mounts, meaning this drive cannot be used for automatic backup with software like Mac OS X's Time Machine or in conjunction with Aperture and its Vault backups. I've managed to get by without those functions, but the media it currently hosts total to a size I cannot copy over to other storage media, so the "erase the disk and reset it" option to fix the AFP mount issue is a non-solution.
So, where this NAS's native Mac & PC mounting solutions are useful, they can also be problematic. If you've already got a 2Big and want more space, the warranty may make one of these worth the money, just in case your drive fails.
If you're not going to be doing sustained read/write operations, I suggest using a safer RAID configuration that I did. Remember on the 2BigNetwork, the fastest read/write speed is 16Mbps, so speed won't be as big a highlight as RAID offers.

The drive itself is cheap, you're paying loads of money for a drawer of stamped metal, attached with a sticker to the hard drive making it official LaCie. If you're using one of their raid solutions, you need the software on the drive's hidden partition to run the OS for the device. Sensitive software, prone to failure.
Find a different backup solution, seriously.
