Very Pleasantly Surprised!Feb 26, 2009
By Josh S. I have been trying to add whole grains other than just the wheat in bread to my diet, and I recently discovered this product. I think this stuff is delicious out of the bag as a side dish with dinner or as my entire lunch. It has an incredible amount of flavor, with no sodium. Yes, the flavor is "nutty", as one would expect from a blend of whole grains. I am not a big fan of this type of food in general, but I was very pleasantly surprised by it and cannot recommend it enough for flavor, ease of preparation, and overall healthfulness.
I generally heat it up as instructed on the package -- microwaved 60 seconds after being emptied into a bowl with a little water added -- but sometimes I eat it at room temperature. It can be a little soggy if eaten as a leftover, I find, but not too bad.
Obviously, I would recommend buying a single bag to try first, as tastes vary. There are lots of other comments on this product over at the Kashi website, too.

This heat-n-eat item is a good base for flavors that you add before servingFeb 19, 2009
By Riki This item is already cooked and only requires heating. There are no flavors added to the pilaf, so it is definitely not something you should expect to heat and serve.
That being said, it is a wonderfully chewy, whole grain product (not a rice!) that can be spiced up in any number of ways to be the perfect compliment to your meal. I typically make my 'flavor base' seperately by sauteing my vegetable ingredients, then adding my spices, bouillions, stocks and herbs. I allow it to reduce until most of the liquid has evaporated or thickened. Then I add the heated pilaf to it, stir, and add my toppers(toasted nuts, scallions, dried fruits, etc) before serving.
Be sure to add no more than 1Tbsp per package when heating in the microwave in order to avoid a mushy texture. If making on the stovetop, I recommend steaming the product rather than using direct heat to avoid burning.

Excellent substitute for riceJan 12, 2009

This is a pretty good substitute for rice in most dishes. The blend of grains give more texture to dishes that just rice would, although this may not be the best choice for picky eaters who don't really like the chewy texture of some whole grains to begin with.
It's nice to have this so convenient and be able to heat it up in the microwave in a minute or two. Makes it easy to put together a quick healthy meal.
Ideas for use: You can mix a little salsa, cheese, and refried beans in and make a perfect side dish or burrito filling. You could top it with broccoli and cheese. You could serve it alongside a stir fry.

Convenient KashiSep 12, 2009
By Doris R. Kem

Kashi has many whole grain products, and this is one of the healthiest. There is no added salt, so the sodium content is 0mg. the 7 whole grain pilaf is very good tasting. There are 8 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber per serving. The container serves two. The grains are a little chewy, but not too much.
This product is also very convenient. The packet is simply opened, add a tablespoon of water, and heat in the microwave for a minute and a half. That's a lot faster than having to cook whole grains! It can be a hassle to cook whole grains--takes a lot of time for some of them.
I highly recommend this product if you want better nutrition and save time cooking. I like to serve this product with Kitchens of India or Tasty Bite Indian entrees. It is good eats!

A quick cook item that's actually as good as the original (maybe better)Sep 05, 2009
By Hunter Elliott I had been looking for the "original" Kashi pilaf for a while. It was listed here, but the product was unavailable for an undetermined length of time. I had seen this product in a local store, and I figured buying one package would be a good test of it for taste/quality.
While I liked the original, this "quick" version actually surprised me. I didn't like having to boil the original for 20 some-odd minutes. This one you nuke for 1 to 2 mins. I liked it so much that I bought a case of it on here. I know some people wonder "what the hell would I use this for/in?" For me, I use this as an addition to my oatmeal in the morning. I drop a couple of big spoonfuls of it into my quick-cook oatmeal while it's cooking and it gives this a very "nutty" feel and taste. The one thing that surprised me was that it also helped curb my urge for mid-morning snacks. It's now time to order another case :)
Oh, and for those of you who remember Yoplait's "Breakfast Yogurt" of about 10+ years ago, listen up. For those who're not familiar with this product, Yoplait marketed this Breakfast Yogurt that had a lot of fruit, but also had these whole grain pieces in it. It was pretty chewy, tasted great, and again it was pretty filling. This Kashi product is what you're looking for if you want to make your own. Throw some of this into some yogurt (any flavor) with some fruit and you've got a great new breakfast (or dessert) item!
