FaIr Sound from Expensive SpeakersJun 04, 2010

The JBL Duet III speakers are the latest from the JBL Duet series of two-piece systems. They produce fair but not great sound.
The Duet III excels at treble audio with remarkable clarity. Music sounds fine as long as no bass is required. JBL has not addressed bass in the Duet III. In fact, there is no bass/treble controls on the Duet III, just a unique volume control with an off setting on the top of the right speaker.
Installation is quite simple: just connect the attached cables of each speaker and then hook up the AC adapter and connect to your audio jack on your PC or Mac. JBL has permanently attached all cables. You just need to plug them into where they go. The negative of this configuration is that it makes is difficult to move the speakers to another location without removable cabling.
My biggest complaint is the pricing of the Duet III. At a list of $149 and a street price around $115, you would expect better sounding speakers. Yes, the high end is very clean, but there is little low-end audio.
If you want to impress your friends, show them the great look of the Duet III speakers with their champagne design. Just don't let them listen very closely as they might be disappointed. For $149, I would expect better sounding audio than what the JBL Duet III provides.

An Excellent CompromiseSep 28, 2010

I read a lot of reviews on various speakers before finally settling on these JBL duet IIIs. I must say I am very impressed. Some reviewers seamed critical of their sound quality, but perhaps their expectations are too high for a pair of desktop speakers. I won't say that these sound as good as my 6.1 dolby set up, but in general they produce great sound for music and movies. The bass could be a little deeper, but it is very clear and the mid-treble range is flawless. If you order these expecting the sound of a full stereo system you will be disappointed. However; if you just want good sounding speakers that are easy to set up and don't take up a lot of space, you will be very pleased. I paid $107 w/ free super saver shipping and it was worth every penny. Nice job JBL!!!

Great speakers for use with my MAC MiniAug 29, 2009
By Rob I have looked at tons of speakers, from the sublime to the tinny, and bought JBL Duet III's. They are compatible with my MAC Mini, seem to have excellent range, acceptable bass response, and very good treble and mid-range. I listen to everything from online news to opera CDs, and the Duet III's are excellent (especially for $100). Are They audiophile level... no; But they are truly excellent speakers, nice clean design, space conserving and unobtrusive, and connecting them up was so easy I didn't need the simple diagram included with them. I may buy a second set for my wife's IMAC.

JBL Duet III: Speakers that look and sound good.Apr 29, 2010
By David S. Roberts The Duet IIIs look elegant. They also look as though they might be top-heavy and tend to capsize but they do not. Their bases are big enough to keep them standing. The sound the Duets produce has a nice balance between clarity and richness. Both music and spoken voice are heard clearly with reasonable richness and without the booming false bass that spoils the sound of many cheap speakers. These speakers obviously cannot produce the high volume of larger audiophile speakers that cost 20 times as much but, for use with a computer they are close to ideal. Nice work, JBL.

Great Speakers!Jul 27, 2011

These speakers are great for many things. I chose to have them at my office. They have amazing clarity and for their size an amazing amount of bass. I don;t know where people are getting that these have no bass. Are they better than my 7.2 setup at home? NO, but then I never expected them to be. I was a little nervous buying them, but I heard friend's JBL ipod dock. It was an older one and small, very small. I was blown away by the sound that little ipod dock could produce so i took a chance on these. Now I am heavily considering getting a second pair for use at home. They do not take up a lot of room on your desk because most of the speaker is in the air so they save you some desk real estate. I got mine used and paid $50 for them but I would not hesitate on the $99 from amazon. As I said earlier I may buy another pair for my home office. I would pay the $99, again these are a great set of speakers. My current home office speakers even have a sub so they can achieve some bass but it is sloppy and boomy and the detail is just not there in my music; compared to the tight, clear, crisp, warm, and accurate sound these produce.
Update: As I had feared, once these are taken out of the office setting performance has suffered. They do not perform well at mid to higher volumes. Since I had received these speakers I had noticed a crackling noise coming from one of the speakers. The speaker that does NOT have the volume control would have sloppy bass reproduction. The other performed admirably. I am not sure if this is because of the seller or manufacture's defect. Could be why I was able to pick these up for $50. So for that price not gonna be too upset.
