Not just for the Mac MiniMar 02, 2009
By John Rutherfurd Not just for the Mac Mini
I originally purchased one of these as a companion to a Mac Mini. But it has been such a spacious and reliable drive that I have purchased more for different machines including my Windows laptop. And the built in USB hub is a nice touch. It is so convenient I don't know why it is not a standard feature of all external hard drives. I highly recommend for use with PCs or Macs.
If you do use it with a Mac Mini, I have a recommendation. Somewhere in the documentation I read where it suggested to stack the MiniMax under the Mac Mini. While it does fit and stacks nicely, it gets way to hot. I would recommend putting them side by side.

While I can't refute other reviewers' experiences, I can share my own. I now own 6 of these drives, one 500 gig and five 1 terabyte models that I have purchased gradually over the past year and a half. I'm actually here to buy two more. They all were shipped the next day and arrived from Amazon in new condition. And all 6 of them are still running flawlessly. I still highly recommend this drive.

Does what it's supposed to and looks good doing itMay 30, 2009
By Blazing Pascal This is a solid product for a good price. It looks good and is a great addition to a Mac Mini media pc set up. Stack these things up and you can get all your dvd's on there with the right software. Works like a charm.
That said, it is worth noting that, as of today (5/29/09) not a single one of the 1 star reviews has had anything negative to say about the actual product as far as I can tell. That is, they either didn't receive it, or it took too long to ship, or it had scratches on it or looked used, etc. I realize that people need a place to post their problems, and those are legitimate problems. It's just that ALL of the negative reviews are not actually about the usefulness or functionality of the product itself. Just something to keep in mind when you might be tempted to overvalue the star rating.

Easy SetupOct 15, 2008
By Roger Plichta It was extremely easy to setup the drive. Just plugged it in and it was Mac formated and found by the OS. It has been running 24/7 since I purchased (only a few weeks now), but is quiet, not terribly hot, and functioning as intended.

Fine Piece of GearJul 20, 2009

I purchased the Iomega MiniMax 1TB Firewire 400/USB 2.0 with some trepidation after having read the numerous reviews here on Amazon. Reviews about receiving repackaged and/or used drives expecting new products, also being unable to use both the usb and firewire hub capability simultaneously, clunking and excessive heat, all manner of less than stellar things to say. Obviously if one receives a damaged or defective product the review is going to be poor and disappointing; I know on occasion it happens and if it was me I would definitely be dissuaded from further purchases with the same producers. In the past I was unlucky enough to have four jaz drives that one by one picked up a defect that served to render the drives useless and had very little satisfaction from Iomega. A very expensive, and even more time consuming proposition that served to steer me away from Iomega products for the last ten years. But being on a tight budget and needing both the hub capabilities and the storage I decided to take the plunge having watched the price on this unit slowly but surely descending to the point of irresistibility. Fortunately the product arrived, free of any apparent external scratch or damage, I peeled off the plastic top cover, nice and smooth underneath, hooked up the USB side since I had need for the extra hub capability and proceeded to engage in a copy that lasted for 36 hours. The Iomega MiniMax remained cool and quiet, hosted three adjunct usb-power-supply-free drives with no problem and then I set about looking at Iomega's support pages to determine the viability of the remaining firewire plugs. Much to my surprise with just a little reading on the support pages it very plainly says that all the plugs can be used simultaneously. Sooo I waited for the 36 hours to pass, the copy was 540 gig and after some double checking on the copy's validity ( i check the bit counts ) I unplugged a cd drive that can use either fire or usb and plugged it into one of the firewire plugs and in turn to the computer. Happily .. the machine 'meowed' at me to let me know the new connection had been accepted and the minimax was now hosting four drives beside itself. Now three firewire plugs for a hub really doesn't add a whole lot of capability to any given system since one has to be used to connect to the computer and then one to whatever other drive you wish to use and leaves only one additional port to pass to say another minimax.. etc.. fortunately of course firewire drives most often daisy chain much like the much maligned SCSI connections of the past that soo many people seemed unable to fathom let alone hook up. At any rate so far, I'm right pleased with this piece of gear, it's working just fine at the moment and if things proceed according to 'Hoyle' for another month or so I suspect I'll be ordering another of these multi function drives to clean up the remaining usb hub issues in my system and further embellish a nice five TB system

Works great with Mac MiniApr 30, 2009
By Nicholas J. Coker I bought two of these to use as a media center with my Mac Mini. I plugged them in and they work great. I was happy to see that it included a USB cable, a standard Firewire cable, and a really short Firewire cable used when stacking this drive under a Mac Mini. That short cable is a nice addition and keeps clutter to a minimum. The packaging was very good. The finish is nearly identical to the Mac Mini. It is painted plastic but you probably wouldn't even notice the very slight difference in color unless someone told you.
I do have a few minor complaints though. The drive does not go to sleep when plugged in via firewire, it does if plugged in with USB. I have not noticed any kind of speed difference using it as a media drive with USB. You do get a major speed drop if you daisy chain multiple (in my case two) drives together and transfer data from one to the other. This is more a standards problem than a problem with this product though. I would also like the light on the front to dim or dim-flash when the drive is asleep.
For those who stated their drives were scratched, I could be wrong but I believe you are looking at the protective plastic on the top. Yes, it will probably be kind of scuffed up but you are supposed to peel that off so the top of the product is nice and shiny! I got two and they both came very well packaged and free of any scratches.
Also note: this drive goes UNDER a Mac Mini, not on top of. This is due to cooling.
