Software not compatible with Win 7Jan 27, 2011
By C. Ryan The drive works great, fast SATA connection instead of USB is a big plus. But I bought the drive in part for the "Never Down" software which is supposed to back up your system drive. It's "included" by which they mean it's not actually in the box, you have to download it. It wouldn't install and then Iomega told me it's not compatible with Windows 7 (which has been out for a long time now). I told them the box lists Windows 7 as being compatible, they said what that really means is it's compatible with the drive, not necessarily the software. Apparently the box means whatever they want it to mean.
Bottom line, don't buy this for the software.

Maybe best eSATA for price at time I bought itSep 23, 2010
By Make IT happen I probably use this a little differently than most people. I have several computers and a network NAS (Synology DS109) that is used for central storage, so instead of backing up an individual computer, I am backing up my NAS. I had previously been backing up to a USB 2.0 drive that finally died. I didn't want to spend too much but needed 1TB, wanted the eSATA speed, but the option of using USB if eSATA didn't workout (the Synology runs on a Linux kernel and I wasn't sure of compatibility). So this one popped up on Amazon as being the proper capacity, option of eSATA or USB, waranty, really good reviews, and a great price for all that.
So far so good, backed up 250 GB (200,000+ files) from the NAS in about 6 hours. Not as fast as I thought, but I don't use any of the included software and the bottleneck could be on my NAS. It is important to note that backing up a few large several GB files only takes seconds, it is when the system has to enumerate tens of thousands of files that it takes longer so I can back up 12 GB of 3 ISO files in seconds, but 1GB of thousands pdfs or pictures may take 10+ minutes. Like some other reviews, no real heat issues, and actually runs very cool now that the single initial large backup is done. I've had it for almost a month, the NAS backs up to it every 4 hours, never fails, and everything is there.
It came very fast through Amazon (about 2 days on Super Saver shipping) and came with all the needed things. It was supplied with both the USB and the eSATA cable. 5 stars for this one from me.

Hook up is easy as 1,2,3.Oct 01, 2011

"Try it B4U Buy it."
I bought this ESATA 3TB hard drive to hook up to my Fios DVR. I opened the box, connected the eSata wire to the back of the Fios DVR, connected the other end to the hard drive. I connected the power cable, plugged into the wall. Turned on my TV and DVR. Hit the DVR button, then "Enable more Hard Drive space" and "wallah" the Fios Motorola DVR recognized this Iomega hard drive. I know have the ability to record 420 hours of HD television!
If you go to the Fios website, it will recommend you buy a Western Digital eSata drive and they are on back order for 1-2 months... Buy this one, it works 1,2,3. !! Good luck, happy recording...

Great storage option - Needs tweaking and NO SLEEP MODENov 15, 2010
By B. Balicki I recently purchased this desktop drive (2GB) to use in conjunction with an Asus OPlay! media player (which, might I add, is fantastic). Both use eSATA (external SATA connection). I chose this type of connection, rather than USB 2.0 (which it also has), because I was going to be transferring a huge amount of data from my PC to this drive. eSATA claims to have 'burst' rates of up to 115MB/sec but average about 58 MB/sec (this must be on a REALLY new and FASTER machine). USB 2.0 runs typically about half this rate. When I received the item, I set up the drive as eSATA, through a bracket on the back of my PC (which is not typically recommended, but I didn't want to drop more dough on another PCI card). Changed setting under BIOS to use the drive as RAID, but did not format and left it as FAT32 (possible an issue - read on). I have my main hard disks as NTFS. Seemed to be working well, but was shocked when I went to transfer a large file (approx. 3.45 GB). It was taking quite a while and my PC was lagging in every other area (explorer, internet explorer and other programs). I was curious, so I began writing down the details and even tried using USB 2.0 connection in the same setup (with the eSATA connection unplugged, of course).
3.45 GB file transfer 2:17 min/sec eSATA FAT32 3.45 GB file transfer 2:49 min/sec USB 2.0 FAT32
Not exactly a huge gap and caused some frustrating trial and error. However, all was worth while. REFORMATTED drive to be NTFS, and setup drive as SIMPLE under WinXP. So, ran the same experiment again:
3.45 GB file transfer 1:47 min/sec eSATA NTFS 3.45 GB file transfer 2:38 min/sec eSATA NTFS
It was a big enough jump to make me smile. From 25MB/sec using eSATA (FAT32) to 32MB/sec (NTFS). Also, the PC does not lag anymore (probably due to the compatibility of the NTFS systems now). If you format, choose quick, especially if it's a new drive. No point in spending HOURS and HOURS to change it over. Mind you, there are a TON of other variables that would modify/change this equation (faster PC, harddrive speed, eSATA connection card, etc.), but if anyone was experiencing lag like I was, perhaps they may try this option and have similar/better results. Let me know if this sounds close or if I am way off base. Either way, the drive is very stable (so far) and looks good.
One bummer about the drive itself is that there is NO SLEEP mode (hence, 4 stars). This is not a HUGE issue, as I typically turn it off after use anyhow, but if you plan on leaving this unattended, it seems like it would burn itself out as it appears to be constantly spinning until physically shut down. Yes, I know, this is a very long review, but if someone is gonna drop some dough, you want to know, right? Found this drive to be the most affordable on Amazon w/ free shipping.
With the stuff that was mentioned/perfomed above, I am a happy customer so far. I now have two Iomega drives and they have not let me down yet. The Asus OPlay! recognizes within seconds and makes exploring media a breeze. 1080p movies do not lag a bit with the eSATA connection.

It's fast! It's huge! It works as advertised!Mar 14, 2010

I was in desperate need of backing up my entire PC after a hardware failure. This was on my laptop which caused me to temporarily find religion as one does when you feel you are going to lose 500 gb worth of irreplaceable data (in the form of art files, portfolio assets, and general work data!) also wanted ot have enough room to spare so I went for this bad boy at 2 times the size of my back up to allow for expansion. It installs quickly, comes with eSATA cable making it appear as just another hard drive in your system and transfer data very quickly to and from your hard drive. It comes with back up software which allows you to setup back ups as needed and is foolproof. I waited for this drive to become in stock once again and it was well worth it!
