Reminds me of the Sunmaid Raisin Bread of my childhood!Jun 21, 2008

"Gluten-Free Pastry Chef"
I am a trained pastry chef and recently found out that my 2 yr old son and I can not eat wheat. I have been baking non-stop to make tasty gluten-free/dairy free (can't have that either!) breads, muffins and cookies from scratch. Although we have had many good results, I do like to have pre-made loaves of bread on hand for busy days. Many gluten free breads disappoint, but this raisin bread is one of our favorites. Great flavor, moist, and so yummy with earth balance butter substitute! This bread also makes a great French toast. Please note: Toasting is a must!! Do not try to eat gluten free loaf breads without toasting. You will regret it.

This bread illustrates problem with Ener-g FOODS GF breadFeb 07, 2009

It's so sad that this bread is as bad as it is, because gluten-free bread can be so much better. Homemade from Bette Hagman recipes or even bread made from a mix is far superior to Ener-g Foods' processed and preserved breads. Initial impression: Brown color with raisins, looks firm with some small air holes. Toasted: Initial crunch with mildly pleasing brown rice flavor. However, there is also a faintly plastic, faintly sweet underlying flavor that becomes more noticeable as you chew. Raisins are very, very soft and watery. Wondering why it doesn't have any cinnamon or spice to cut the bland sweetness of the product. Microwaved: The slightly acidic smell of preservatives was worse this way. Texture was like a microwaved brown sponge. Inedible. Good points: Has added folate etc. like regular bread. Relatively crunchy when toasted. Has raisins (I guess this is a good point). Not the heaviest bread I've ever had. Bad points: Underlying sweet flavor (perhaps the fruit sweetener) and chemical underlying notes. Revolting when microwaved. Rating: 3/10 Would I buy it again? Absolutely not. I'd make my own or go without.

raisin bread if you mustJun 28, 2007

This bread has a rather tough and crumbly texture but the raisins do add much needed moisture and taste. It is better toasted but was not as tasty as I was hoping. It does, however, make an acceptable french toast. This raisin bread illustrates the biggest problem with gluten free breads, namely, the lack of resemblence to the real deal.
Product is not as describedMay 23, 2009

I recently ordered a case of this Ener-g raisin loaf to try because I'm on a low salt diet and need to use potassium supplements instead. When you read the nutritional facts you see the product claims 55 mg sodium per slice and 200 mg of potassium. What you get is instead a product that has 80 mg sodium and 100 mg potassium. I can buy raisin bread at the store with lower sodium than this! To make matters worse, while I couldn't eat this bread, I gave some to a friend to try and even though it is supposed to have a long shelf life, the bread crumbled in his hands and was very powdery and tasted terrible. Either the shelf life had expired on this product when it was shipped or the preservatives are not working as well as expected. Maybe a fresh loaf purchased at a health food store might do better in a taste test but buyer beware in buying in bulk without seeing the product and not being able to return it to Amazon for a refund.
Delicious for GFCF DietApr 01, 2009
By P. Knutson In the quest for things that taste good for my son's GFCF diet (part of the Defeat Autism Now! process), this has been a hit. He likes this better than any of the other store-bought GFCF breads. Like other GFCF breads, it needs to be toasted and covered with GFCF margarine (Earth Balance or Smart Balance Organic) and jelly.
