5Dogs LOVE this Food. Great Ingredients. No By-Products. Great Results. Highly Recommended.Feb 13, 2010
By Carrie, "Formerly "Sister Carrie""
After switching my cats from Iams to Castor & Pollux, we decided that it was the dog's turn. Our three medium sized dogs (all around 45lbs) had been eating Iams Lamb Meal & Rice Formula for about 3 years. Even though Iams is considered a premium food, our concerns were:

(1) the third ingredient is corn meal and one of the proteins is chicken by-product meal (Chicken by-product meal consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice).
(2) Our dogs were putting on weight despite the fact that they are active dogs, and
(3) An olfactory-related concern - when resting, the dogs passed gas - a lot of gas!

The gas got us. Even though Castor & Pollux is a more expensive dog food, we decided that it was worth a try. Forty-five pounds of dog food later, I'm happy that we switched because the dogs love the food, their coats are healthy, they are slimming down with no loss of energy, and, best of all, the gas issue is no longer an issue.

Since this information isn't listed on the Amazon product page, and since ingredients are a main consideration when purchasing pet food, Castor& Pollux Canine Weight Management ingredients are (from the back of the bag):

Chicken, Chicken Meal, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Oat Groats, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Brewers Rice, Turkey Meal, Rice Protein Concentrate, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Potatoes, Chicken Fat Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Salmon Meal, Cultured Whey, Dried Carrots, Dried Bananas, Dried Apples, Chicken Cartilage (natural source of Glucosamine & Chondroitin), Ground Flaxseed, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Dried Blueberries, Dried Papaya, Choline Chloride, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, L-Carnitine, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganous Oxide, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin K1 Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Cobalt Carbonate, Yeast Culture (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae), Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Niger Fermentation Extract, Dried Trichoderma Longibrachiatum Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract and Fermentation Solubles.

Each bag has a Best if Used by Date, and comes with an Unconditional Guarantee from the manufacturer.

Our final decision is to stick with this food. Our dogs love it & we love the results. Highly Recommended.

5Outstanding productNov 30, 2011
By Jack Pine "Jack"
My dogs, being the picky eaters that they are, absolutely love this food. In the past when I have gotten bags of dog food, both of my dogs initially love the food, but, after a few days, the food just sits in their bowls until they realize that they are not getting anything else. Not the case with this food. Each time I feed them, the food is quickly eaten. After many trials of different foods, this has proven to be the best yet.

5FANTASTIC DOG FOODNov 18, 2011

This is absolutely the BEST DOG FOOD i've found. I have (4) dogs and finally only have to buy 1 kind for all to eat. Before i bought 3 different foods, just to get my pets to eat! They love it and since it is a holistic food, i feel good that it is also healthy for them.. I was afraid it would be cost prohibitive at the local pet centers, until I discovered it through AMAZON.. Please don't ever discontinue having it available, or my dogs just might starve....PRAISE TO AMAZON!!!

5It's a good thingOct 25, 2011

I found this by chance and it was the little heart shapes with bits of carrots, peas, and banana chips that caught my eye. I took it home for my 10 yr old golden retriever, and she loved it. Now it's a daily food for her. It is naturally good with it's first ingredient, "chicken".

My dachshund, Rusty, was a rescue from the streets. He was a skinny 10 pounds and covered with sores and infested with flees when I found him. With good vet care and a little TLC, he ballooned to 22 pounds within 6 months. Then I had the problem of trying to reduce him to an appropriate size. I tried many different brands of weight management food and even prescription food, but he never lost any weight. I did portion control too, but the weight stayed on. I then found Castor and Pollux at my local Petco store and started to feed it to the whole crew (5 doxies at that time) and the weight started to come off!. Then I ran into the problem of my local Petco never having the weight management food in stock when I needed it. After searching for other methods to get this food, I was lucky enough to discover that I could get it from Amazon on a regular schedule and as much of it as I needed with free shipping with the prescription order. My dogs love the food and the real dried veggies. And yes, they lick the bowl clean. This is the only weight management food my dogs ever lost weight on. After about a year on the food, Rusty was reduced from a hefty 22 pounds to a svelte 13 1/2 pounds. I still practice portion control, but I will continue to feed my "kids" this food as long as they continue to make it.
