3Good Network Printer but Scanner Funtion unable to NetworkJul 20, 2009
By M. Lapham
Hopefully I will save someone the trouble that I went through. Although I am big fan of Canon network printers, you should know the scanner funtion of this machine is not capable of being networked. The scanner funtion only works via USB. You can network the printer/copier, but not the scanner function. I needed network availabilit for all three funtions. But it's a great printer/copier.

5Fantastic Printer/Copier/ScannerFeb 16, 2009
By Brett J. Marshall
This is a fantastic product. It was extremely easy to install the software and was up and running in a matter of minutes. I chose this model because it seemed to be a great 'in between' for a home printer that I could also use for my business. It saved me from having to purchase some huge stand alone printer and, of course, saved thousands from purchasing a stand alone unit. This has a high volume printing capability with reasonable toner units available. It has been extremely reliable. I have only used about 3000 pages of printing / copying to date, but have yet to have some type of paper jam. There is also very little delay in printing & copying going from power on to actually printing must be about 15 seconds, if that. There is not some 2 minute 'warm up' process that delays you which is a pleasant surprise. Often, I need something printed quickly and this model is quick.

5It's great to live in a modern world!Apr 05, 2009
By S. Ewing
This machine is everything it promises to be and really fills the bill for my small business. It can deliver a really nice print product, but the copying capability for the price is the amazing part. The feeder is reliable...whether it's 2-sided, one-sided, or even if you've left a document on the glass by mistake. And the reproduction quality is top-notch and easily tweaked.

3Decent Small Office Workhorse BUT...May 04, 2010
By J. Cole
We've had this printer for over a year and I generally think the Canon imageCLASS MF6540 is a decent all-in-one small office workhorse. It prints, copies and scans and has done so admirably given the mid-to heavy use it gets as a printer and copier. I does its job as the office scanner as well.

PROS:

1. It prints documents well. No complaints about it printing crooked, blurry, etc.

2. Canon toner seems to last quite a while (the large toner cartridge, not the smaller one).

3. It has a document feeder to photocopy a small stack of documents (about 20 pages).

4. It can copy/scan on the flatbed portion of the printer. Good for small/odd-sized documents.

5. Scans in black and white, grey scale or color. We use it for documents, not photographs. The ability to switch between the document feeder or flatbed to scan makes the MF6450 versatile. It comes with software that converts all scanned documents into PDF or JPEG formats.

6. Easy to set up on the network (has an ethernet port) or as a printer connected to a computer.

CONS:

1. Complicated menus. In order to switch between letter/legal sized documents and envelopes on the multifunction tray, you need to scroll through several sets of menus on the printer itself. I have it memorized by heart now.

2. Canon toner is about $140+ for the large cartridge. Not cheap. But lasts for about five months (I try to get every "drop" of ink before replacing the toner).

3. Document feeder is temperamental: it does not like too-thin paper, so it will just "eat" multiple sheets together and jam. Nor does it like folds or staple holes in the paper, because anything that can make the sheets catch together, this will be an instant paper jam in the document feeder. The width adjustment "arms" of the document feeder also causes the paper jams, too: it's a mite skinner than 8.5", so it squeezes the paper, making it difficult for the rollers to pull the paper through the feeder. (The same rollers that jam on too thin paper, or anything that will cause the sheets to catch together.)

4. Slow scanner: it takes about six to ten seconds per page to scan a black and white document at 300 DPI, using the sheet feeder. If have to scan a stack of documents, this not the multifunction machine you're looking for (see Con #3). It seems slower using the flatbed scanner at the same setting. I would recommend a dedicated scanner if you have a lot of documents for scanning.

5. Scanner does not like the color blue, so if you have documents with blue ink, then it will not come out if you scan in black and white. You have to use gray scale, which makes the file a little bigger. This is of some concern if you have to email the scanned document and the recipient has a file size limit on email attachments.

6. Print per page output is a bit slow compared to a dedicated laser printer (had an HP Laserjet 1200 prior to this scanner, it had a faster print output than the MF6540).

7. It's HUGE. Bigger than I thought it would be. If you have a small space, I would not recommend it.

8. It's rather noisy: either using the sheet feeder or printing.

In conclusion, I don't regret buying the Canon Imageclass MF6540 because it has been relatively reliable despite the cons I listed. The document feeder is annoying and has caused some moments where I just wanted to kill it since it was jamming constantly when I was on a deadline. It's a solid office machine, but I do wish it printed/scanned quicker and a less diva-ish document feeder.

Update (Aug 13, 2011):

We got rid of the Canon because the ADF (auto duplex feeder) stopped working earlier this year, despite a thorough cleaning. The paper would partially feed and jam. This was weakest point of the this printer from the beginning. I no longer recommend Canon printers/copiers because I noticed that the ADF on the aging Canon copiers need constant repairs, as well. Too bad. It was a decent printer before the ADF died.

Our office switched to a commercial network color multifunction machine (Ricoh) to handle large jobs and the Epson Workforce 840 inkjet printer for small jobs and "truer" color print jobs.

5OutstandingMar 16, 2009
By L. Hudgins
I just wanted to write a review because this is what made me choose from other products is the reviews. This product is great! I love it and it had more features on it than I expected. It arrived in a timely manner and was really easy to set up. I would definitely suggest this product to anyone looking for a copier instead of a printer although it can do both when connected to the computer. Superb! 5 stars
