Good but not greatDec 05, 2011
By andiesenji I am disappointed in this product. I had expected something with more flavor considering the description note: "its hearty and rich full flavor."
I prepare several dishes with Guinness Stout and even a small amount will produce a flavor that is unmistakable. The amount of stout in this recipe must be a small fraction because I could not detect it at all and certainly no hint of Worcestershire Sauce, which usually makes its presence known in dishes such as this.
For me it was much too bland and had a "pasty" flavor I associate with undercooked wheat flour thickening.
Yummy But Where is the Beef?Apr 14, 2012
By California Native I bought this out of curiosity and was pleasantly surprised that the flavor was as good as at my favorite Irish pub. Alas, when I poured the contents into a pan to warm it up, I noticed there were lots of potato and carrot slices... lots of rich broth/ gravy but. only two wee pieces of beef smaller than sugar cubes. It was funny, as the can is quite large.
I can recommend it based on the flavor- but expect to "BYO beef" if you are going to feed family or friends or you'll just be serving them a Guiness flavored 'soup'.
(For any non cooks or lazy folks out there- Omaha Steaks pot roast could work well!)

Easily amongst the best stews in a canAug 19, 2010
By Catoptric It's almost as if you visited someones grandparent in Ireland and had this to eat. The kind of thing that is homemade but couldn't be pulled off unless skilled at doing so. Perhaps you could think of it as a small batch stew you take home and have ready for special occasions when most things available don't seem good enough to eat.
This might be more akin to taking the leftovers from a stew dish, though without much of the greasiness that comes with it. Just the right sweetness and combination of red wine and Guinness, herbs, meat and vegetables, etc. It's practically homemade except for the hydrolyzed ingredients that line it's contents (which is where they do appear to have research and testing from a modern food science perspective.
I plan to try the Tavern stew as well. The Haggis they make is good though I consider the stew to be of more interest to me now. It's probably better to buy from their website directly because they sell it cheaper, even though you have to pay additional for shipping; it was much faster processing even though Amazon is fast.
