4GREAT, BUT NOTICE!May 23, 2007
By Mandress "Mandress"
I bought this BUFFALO NAS after an intensive research. I've been using it for 6 month..and It is a great buy! Flawless operation and fast. Try to use with CAT 6 cables and Gigabit peripheral to see at it best. BUT 1) It has not sleeping mode! ( However, you switch off and on very quickly and is quite). 2) please DO NOT USE MEMEO SOFTWARE that comes with the package. Look for some other software or do it manually. MEMEO looks nice but has issues and slow down the backup process a lot , also it is not precise ( ...a little problem no? ).3) Also consider that when your read about this NAS in other sources and reviews they tell you this NAS uses a SATA 250GB WESTERN DIGITAL hard drive. Not so! I opened it and I found a SATA 250GB SAMSUNG. However, I can't complain. It is fast and very quite.

Guess I need to trust this HD even though I trust better other Brands. But It is fair; BUFFALO never tells you what are they using in their NAS solutions. They say is fast and quite, and that is what you get. BUY IT.

5Very easy to useJan 24, 2008

Considering the complexity of what it does, I'm very happy with how easy it is to set up and use this NAS, with Windows XP or Windows 2000.

You can run the setup program from the CD without installing it, to find the IP. And then go to that IP in your web browser, and set up drives and users. You have good detailed control over access. Also can set up backups to USB drives, directly connected to the NAS.

In Windows, it's easy to map a network drive. If you use a password, then every time you reboot and use the drive again, you will need to re-enter your id and password. But it is surprisingly easy.

Only potential downside is speed of data access. It's fast enough for most uses, just not as fast as I expected. I can't compare it to other NAS drives of similar price; maybe performance is actually good in comparison. But using a stopwatch and copying large files to and from a ramdisk over a gigabit network using Cat6 cable, reads were about 16MB/sec and writes about 14MB/sec. (About 130 and 110 Mb/sec) Using Atto benchmark to test, with large enough chunks, speeds rose to about 28-38MB/sec. So there may be a Windows performance issue when copying files.

Overall, highly recommended unless you are not at all technically inclined and don't have someone to help. Much, much better experience than with the average computing device I've come in contact with.

UPDATE: I've now tried this with Ubuntu 7.10, and it is at least as easy to use there as in Windows. Maybe even a little easier!

5It worksJun 08, 2007

It's works. The only dislike I have is it can only export the disk using Windows or Apple shares, so if you are using Linux you'll have to use smbfs to connect.

5Buffalo LinkstationJan 03, 2007
By Rudolph Couri "TT"
This product is an excellent buy it is my first Network Storage device and I have litle regrets it has performed as stated by manufacturer. The only problem was I tried getting some assistance from tech support and they are very letargic in their response. Generally what makes this product a great device is due to the fact that it runs on a linux o/s therfore it very stable and the Hard Drive is made by Western Digital.

When I installed it at first it was connected to a Linksys WRT54G 10/100 router I eventually made some changes to my network and now have it connected to a Netgear gigabit switch and oh how this unit is performing, you can actually see the difference in the acccess speeds. I would recomend it any time.

5Just Love my LinkStationMay 04, 2008

I bought my LinkStation, the first time I recieved it, the Fan on the Unit failed.Amazon changed it out so quickly, no troubles. But I was a bit more hesistant on the next Unit. But myLinkStation is the best. I can really go wireless. The only thing is, backing up...seems to only work to oher LinkStations on your network [I have only 1].
