Great Printer and an Excellent ScannerMay 18, 2009
By Kenneth M. Flock

Selected this printer for a home network printer. Great price for this type of printer. Easy setup as a network printer / scanner. We leave the printer on 24-7, the printer sleeps when it is not in use for a period of time. Yes, it takes a minute to warm up if you print and the printer is in sleep mode. This I believe is standard for a network laser printer. Once we start using, it prints and scans very fast from any of the four pc's on our network. The scanner is quite good, I was surprised that a duel function [printer / scanner] scanner was of this quality. The printer comes with the ink toner kit. We are very happy with this printer, and would recommend to anyone looking for a small business or home network printer.

Excellent unit for the priceMay 08, 2010

I got mine on sale for $300 so it was a great deal. It replaced an inkjet printer that was rated at the same speed. However, this printer is about 300% faster for me. I print a lot of business quality text with images that took forever to print on the inkjet. This printer spits out good quality color pictures and text in a fraction of the time of the inkjet. For the inkjet to keep up with this laser printer you would have to set the inkjet to poor draft quality mode. (Note that color laser printers will not give you photo quality pictures. They will give you good quality photos for business use but not something to put in your personal photo album.)
I gave this printer only 4 stars for 2 reasons. It is a little noisy while printing, and Brother appears to try to scam you with the end of toner warning. It said I was out of black toner when I reached 2080 pages printed with the original cartridges. I put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensor hole on the toner tray, reset the toner counter, and printed an additional 1,660 pages before the print quality started to drop. So the out of toner warning is way too early on these printers.
To reset the toner counter is easy. First open the cover to access the toner tray. Press the Clear/Back button. Scroll up and down to pick which toner cartridge you want to reset. Hit OK. Congratulations, in 5 seconds you just almost doubled the life of your toner cartridge! For each cartridge there are two options. For example, for black you will see B.TNR-S and B.TNR-H. Pick -S for standard capacity cartridge and -H for the high capacity cartridge. Note that you will need to also cover the low toner sensor hole after you reset the cartridge or it will still not work.
To cover the low toner optical sensor hole you slide out the toner tray that holds the 4 cartridges. You will see a hole along the left side of the tray next to each cartridge. The holes are about 1/2" in diameter near the upper edge of the tray. Get a small piece of black electrical tape and tape over the holes. That will make the printer think the cartridge is still full all the time.
Keep an eye on the print quality. Eventually when the cartridges really start to run low the print quality will get poor and you will know you need to replace the cartridge(s) or refill them. (Refilling works but it is very messy and not recommended but for people that are very mechanically inclined.)

Perfect machine!May 09, 2009
By Lindsay This machine is amazing! It's very compact for a color laser all-in-one. Very easy to set up and use. I only wish it did auto-duplex.

Excellent valueApr 11, 2009
By D. Keith Karasik I am very happy with this printer. The only thing it lacks is a faxing capability. It scans to email well, but sometimes a simple fax is quicker and easier. Other than that, it networks to our computers well and the print quality is exceptional.
We paid $380 from Amazon.com

Good But Not GreatJan 22, 2010

Good printed, Brother is a good brand of printers, lot of success with similar models; there are only a few things that do not make this great:
1. Size, this thing is huge! If it is for a home or small office, be ready to dedicate a big chunk of your room/office. The scanner seems to add a lot to the size, but not much value, see below.
2. Faxing? Scanner feature is nice, but seems like they could add a faxing feature with minimal rework, if had to purchase again, would pick one that scans and faxes (especially given the size). Also, you have to reach way under the scanner to grab your printed pages, I know, nitpicky, but it is annoying and hard to grab your prints.
3. No Duplex Printing, would opt for duplex printing over the scanner. It does have a manual duplex feature, but sometimes jams given it curls the pages slightly.
4. Minor point, but the user interface on the printer is not that user friendly. The little LCD display could be better setup (HPs I use are much better in this category).
That said, the printing quality and speed is good, networking is a must and a good feature, and the price is okay considering. If I had to do it all again, would probably have gone with a duplex, non scanner Brother color laser printer. Side note, take Amazon up on the free shipping on this beast, no clue how they can afford to send this thing for free, but worth it.
