Great Printer, Excellent ValueJul 02, 2008
By Christopher Ireland Pros: Very fast print speed, auto document feeder, quiet, works great with Mac OSX Leopard, Vista compatible, separate (and cost effective) drum and toner cartridges, low price.
Cons: None, especially at this price.
I have this printer connected to my Apple Airport Extreme Gigabit base station and it works like a charm for printing from all of my Windows and Mac machines. Brother has made it extremely easy to install the drivers (and they've even already updated themselves on the Mac), so the entire setup was under 5 minutes. I love the fact that I can also use this printer as a standalone photocopier--and cheaply since it's a laser printer. Of course, network scanning would be a plus, but that's not the printer's fault. If I need to scan docs or pictures (rarely would I) then I can just connect it directly to my Mac and use it from there. But 99.9% of the time, I just print documents over the network and make photocopies. Great printer!

How can they produce such an awesome machine at this price?Jan 29, 2010

So my ~10 year old Xerox copy machine started consistently eating paper. I toyed with the idea of having it repaired until I realized that it would doubtless have cost me more than a brand new machine would cost. And the new machine would be able to do more at a lower cost. Keep in mind that this old Xerox had cost me about $600 10 years ago. So after a great deal of online research I decided that this unit was the way to go. I can't say enough about this wonderful little machine. Let me list some of it's wonderful attributes. *It's quite small and doesn't require a lot of real estate. *It's remarkably quiet, even when printing. *Great sleep feature that allows you to leave it on 24/7. *Flawless paper handling from the automatic document feeder and paper supply. *Generous 250 sheet paper supply capacity. *Amazing print quality...razor sharp. *Fast little devil (33ppm IIRC). *Option to sort of stack multiple page copies done thru the document feeder (i.e. 111,222,333 or 123, 123, 123). *Prints come right out of the front of the machine...no bulky arm on the side required to "catch" prints. *Attractive aesthetically....fits in beautifully in my office. *Unbelievably economical...I got mine for $129 (sorry Amazon)...toner cartridges reasonably priced.
If there's one negative, it's the LCD display. It's not big enough and it should be backlighted. I would also have liked dedicated buttons for a few of the enlarge/reduce settings. That way you wouldn't have to scroll through the available options by continually pushing the "enlarge/reduce" button until you find the one you're looking for.
So, other than these admittedly picky quibbles, I'd say what you have here is a virtually perfect machine for light to moderate copy duty.

Printer/copying works fine; poor quality scanningMar 16, 2009
By Dave Munger This printer works great, prints fast, and makes very little noise. I'm a Mac user and it works fine with my equipment. It also makes good copies. But the scans are inadequate for my needs. I wanted a basic scanner to put old family photos on my blog. This scanner has streaks and doesn't generate smooth gradations of color. Ended up buying a separate, standalone scanner:
Canon LiDE100 Color Image Scanner (2923B002)

Incredible BargainJan 02, 2009
By Grant R. Gulovsen Printer arrived today. Setup in less than 15 minutes. B&W print & copy quality is outstanding. Envelopes feed smoothly and print much better than my old Samsung SCX-4100 (which this printer replaced). For this price, the number of features and level of quality justifies five stars. Cannot say enough good things about this MFP. Make sure to get it with the auto document feeder.
In response to one of the other reviewers, I typically purchase OEM toners anyway, so the fact that this machine may not accept knock-off toner cartridges does not bother me (and certainly does not seem like a legitimate reason by itself to give this excellent machine only one star).

Great ProductOct 06, 2010
By Samuel P Matyas I have been a long time user of Brother products, not only because they are solid machines, but because you can also get refurb or generic cartridges on the cheap.
I received my model DCP 7040 today and was able to setup the new machine in about 15 minutes including software install. Knowing that the machine comes with a starter cartridge that has a capacity of approximately 1000 pages, I also purchased a high capacity knockoff toner through amazon for an additional $16. (I will write a review on that product as well when it comes time to insert into the printer)
I have already tested out all of the features. This is so far, a solid machine. No issues installing and operating on my PC running Windows 7. Startup to print time is nominal, and the overall noise output of this machine is less than the other three ink jets that we have in this office.
Here is a breakdown in price difference between this machine and my Brother MFC ink jet (for kicks I will also breakdown an HP model we have):
Brother DCP-7040 - Monochrome
I purchased the TN360 compatible cartridge through Tonerpals via Amazon at a rate of $15.40 + $3.99 shipping. Total cost $19.39. This is a High Yield product which allows for approximately 2600 printed pages per cartridge.
Price per page (not including paper) $0.00746 Price per page ($2.50 ream paper) $0.01246
Laser paper is not needed in a laser machine, I have always used normal print paper without any issues and but it in bulk at Sam's or Costco.
Brother MFC 420cn - Color (4 cartridge)
I have used this machine now for over 4 years without any issues using compatible LC-41 ink sets purchased through Vivamart via Amazon at a rate of $8.62 for an 8 pack (2x each) with free shipping. Each cartridge will yield approximately 250 printed pages normal load and much less when printing photos.
Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $4.31 (not including paper) $0.01724 Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $4.31 ($2.50 ream paper) $.02224
HP Officejet 6500 Wireless - Color (4 cartridge)
This machine is just over a year old and the cheapest I can find a set of non OEM's is through eforcity via Amazon at a rate of $22.04 + $2.95 shipping for a total of $24.99. (if you can find them cheaper, by all means...) This also performs at approximately 250 pages per cartridge unless a high yield black is used. the high yield alone is $15+ for the non OEM.
Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $24.99 (not including paper) $0.09996 Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $24.99 ($250 ream paper) $0.10496
This is very much a biased review for Brother equipment, but also based off of current prices for cartridges through Amazon, and at the lowest price listed. Brother Inkjet machines are usually the only comparable machines as far as cost per page (cpp) is concerned, to the costs associated with printing on a laserjet. There is no way I could in good conscience compare a monochrome laserjet to a full color 4 cartridge machine which is why I offered the cpp of laser monochrome, and then those of the comparable multi-function inkjet options.
Wanna see how your current setup matches up? Total cost of cartridges / number of pages printable = cpp
Remember that even though you are printing black and white pages on your full color machine, you will still be utilizing a small portion of your color cartridges to print out that black. There is no real algorithm that will allow you the precise amount of ink used, so a basic total is given. This is why when the cartridge capacity says 250 pages, that is the formula I use. For paper costs: price per ream / 500 = cost per page. ______________________________________________________________________________
This is why I ALWAYS purchase a Brother machine. As you can see, it costs nearly 5 times as much to print on an HP unit as it does to print on a comparable Brother based on prices pulled from the same website. Amazon usually has the lowest collection of prices for ink and toner. I hope this information helps you in your quest to find the best bang for your buck.
Buy Brother.
