4Excellent but expensive :: For children with eating disorders NOT A SNACK.Aug 13, 2009
By J. J. Marino "Geekasaurus Rex"
This product would most assuredly be a 5 star product if it were not for the price. Our son has ADHD and due to the medication he has a difficulty staying hungry. His weight has declined as he has been on the medication. This drink is a wonderful option for parents to augment their child's caloric intake. This product is NOT for obese children to snack on, instead this is a high caloric drink for children with eating disorders. I tasted it and its not bad tasting at all, thereby helping children drink it. The straw has pro-biotics embedded in them, (good bacteria in the plastic) as they drink they are getting the bacteria.

Here are the specs:
Energy: 244 Kcal (about as much as 150g of cooked pasta)
Protein 7.3g
fat 9.3g
Carb 33g

It is also packed with many vitamins and minerals.

Pros:
>> Outstanding drink substitute for children with eating disorders
>> Tasty flavor
>> Good bacteria embedded in the straw

Cons:

Most families could afford this product but it can be a strain on people with lower incomes. Mostly due to the fact that a child should drink at least 1 a day. Current prices of $2.70 a pop x 365 days = almost $1000 a year. If your child needs this drink then of course you will spend the money. It just seems that they could lower the price a little. At $1.50 a piece this is then a 5 star product.

5My 8 year old son likes the taste - I like the nutrition and packaging (for what it is)Jul 29, 2009
By L. Gildart
Over the past few years, I have tried to keep my family's diet as local and organic as possible, with local being the first priority. But local isn't always possible when you live in a super-busy urban environment and the kid has to snack on the go. If there's even a little time to plan, I can fix and pack something, but it's a real challenge to find food that he can take with him in the car on those days when we're rushing around.

I honestly didn't think I would be comfortable feeding my son this stuff. The ingredient list is long. It's not local. It's not even organic. But, after doing some research, I feel okay about it. For one thing, it's made by Nestle, which has a higher goodguide rating than Horizon Organic has. For another, the nutritional label shows that this is a pretty well thought out supplement drink, although it suffers from the high fat and sugar content that a lot of these products seem to have, and it has probiotics to support his immune and digestive systems. So my son gets more bang for his snack-food buck out of one of these than he would get from the Horizon Organic singles. The packaging is minimal and recyclable. That's another plus.

There's no high fructose corn syrup. There's no gluten or lactose.

And my son thinks it's tasty stuff.

It's definitely not something I want him drinking every day. Whenever possible, I'll stick to planning ahead with a thermos full of milk from our local dairy. But I also plan to keep some of these around for those unpredictable days when we've got to go go go all day long.

3Tastes good, but not sure it is all it is cracked up to beAug 18, 2009
By Teacher Jeanne
Boost Kid Essentials Vanilla flavored "Nutritionally Complete Drink" is quite tasty. My son approved of the taste and asked me to buy him some more. He said the straw was super easy to use, much better than those "juice pouch" drink straws. Here is why I might not...

1. number 2 ingredient is sugar
2. number 1 ingredient is water
3. The list of ingredients covers half of the side of the box

Isn't there a better way to get nutrition into our kids? I understand that it is hard to get some kids to eat the right foods. For them this might be a good choice as a supplement. An occasional supplement. Or if your kid has been sick and needs a boost of nutrition. I also have a real hard time with the way it is marketed. It is presented like your kids will be nutritionally incomplete WITHOUT this product.

I give it a 3 star for its taste, packaging and good straw. I think that a good old fashioned cup of milk might be a better choice. The ingredients list is much shorter.

5Excellent for packing your child's lunch. Also good for weekend outings.Aug 28, 2009
By Tom Brody
BOOST KID ESSENTIALS VANILLA comes in a sturdy, folded container, that easily packs into a child's lunchbox, or even the pocket of an overcoat. In addition to containing protein, calories, and (of course) water, BOOST KID ESSENTIALS contains a number of vitamins and minerals that are sometimes nutritional issues in children. Best of all, the drink has a thick, inviting flavor. (I have a personal prejudice towards vanilla.)

The drink includes taurine, vitamin E, iron, zinc, niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, folic acid, biotin, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and iodine, and others nutrients.

Of these, borderline deficiencies or real deficiences are not uncommon for folic acid, iron, and riboflavin. In third world countries, vitamin A deficiency is a serious, ongoing problem, that leads to infections and blindness (not just night blindness). Vitamin K deficiency is a potential problem for all newborn infants, and it is for this reason that all newborn infants are required by law to receive vitamin K. Vitamin D deficiency can and does occur, but when it does occur in humans, it happens in dark-skinned humans that shield themselves from the sun (or always stay indoors) and who also avoid vitamin D-supplemented foods.

This drink might also be of exceptional benefit to alcoholics, since alcoholics who take half of their energy intake via alcohol, are often deficient in a multiplicity of vitamins and minerals, most notably, folic acid, vitamin A, and thiamin. These particular deficiencies can result in anemia, night blindness, and nystagmus, respectfully.

4Passed my three year old's taste test.Aug 20, 2009
By C. Wollin
I was surprised that my picky three year old daughter liked these so well. I let her try one, then she kept asking for another "milkshake".

The boxes are strong, so they aren't as messy as some juice boxes where it's easy to squeeze the juice out of the straw. My daughter was able to drink hers without spilling or squeezing any out at all. I did have difficulty opening one of the foil packets that contained the straw, so a child might not be able to open them easily by themselves. The consistency is like that of milk, not thick like a shake, but it tastes like a milkshake. My daughter has celiac disease, so the fact that these are gluten free was a big plus for us. I wouldn't use them every day, but when she's having tummy troubles and doesn't feel like eating much, it's nice to have something like this around that she can drink.

All in all, we liked the packaging, taste, and the nutritional value, but I was surprised at the high price.
