2Nutritional Info Is Misleading - Contains MaltitolMay 12, 2011
By Jeremy Kossen
I ordered these bars and my first impression was that they were amazing! In fact, I couldn't understand how these bars could be only 4 Net Carbs and contain just 1g of Sugar. It seemed too good to be true. And in fact, it is too good to be true. The bars gets their sweetness from Sugar Alcohols. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact, Net carbs are calculated by taking Total Carbs and subtracting Sugar Alcohols and Fiber -- reason being is that Sugar Alcohols and Fiber have a minimal impact on blood sugar.

However, not all Sugar Alcohols are the same, and the main Sugar Alcohol in these bars is Maltitol. Aside from Maltitol's side effects that can include gas, bloating, gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea, Maltitol just doesn't seem to be much better for you than sugar.

1) Maltitol does seem to impact blood glucose. And in fact, it provides 2 to 3 calories per gram vs. sugar's 4 calories per gram.

2) Maltitol has a relatively high Glycemic index, much higher than other Sugar Alcohols.

From what I've gathered, many people that have problems with their low-carb diets not being particularly effective can often point to Maltitol as a culprit.

It just seems to me that Maltitol is not a particularly good sugar substitute and that when manufacturers use it as an ingredient, the calculations of Net Carbs and Sugars are misleading, because the actual effect of Maltitol on blood sugar is not much better than sugar, and the whole point of low carb diets is managing blood sugar to control weight.

5Warning: Addictive, Easy, Nutritious BreakfastMay 06, 2009
By Penny Pinching Polly "Check out my website for the best deals & contests!"
What makes a low carb granola bar good? Taking a bite and not being able to tell that it is low fat, low carb, and high in protein.

These are moist, chewy, and packed with chocolate! Not only are there plenty of miniature chocolate chips inside the bar, but the bottom of the bar is chocolate coated. It makes for a quick, delicious, guilt-free breakfast. If you have a sweet tooth but cannot afford to eat the fat and calories in a pastry, grab one of these. It will satisfy your need for chocolate.

Are they filling? I find that if I eat one along with a glass of skim milk, I am full for 3.5 to 4 hours.

5Good Low Carb Bar.May 06, 2009
By ZombieLuv
This is probably the BEST Atkins bar out there, IMPO. The texture can be a bit crumbly, but the taste is PERFECT. I could not tell I was eating a low carb high protein bar at all.

5Smells and tastes almost exactly like the black sandwich cookie.Apr 25, 2011
By K. B. Fenner
This is very welcome-- I have been faithfully following the new Atkins plan since February 2010, and have lost almost 50 pounds despite being postmenopausal and hypothyroidal. I have done this without any discomfort or feelings of deprivation, in large part, I think, because I eat two Atkins bars a day, as permitted under the plan. Most of the higher protein Atkins bars are variations on chocolate peanut butter and caramel. They are great, but after 15 months, I branched out into the lower protein breakfast bars, which are generally very tasty, but when I need a little extra protein to curb my appetite, these new cookies and creme bars really hit the spot. They smell and taste almost exactly like chocolate sandwich cookies, and have a very similar crunch. There's no "creme" filling--it's more like a nougat/marshmallow--very chewy--but very tasty and it slows you down from wolfing the whole thing in two bites as I might with a more cookie like product. This gives my other favorite Marshmallow Mudslide a run for its money.

5High Protein/Lost Weight/Meal Replacement/Sugar Alcohol DebateApr 01, 2012
By Lisa "Lisa"
The generally accepted view is that we should seek high protein, low calories, low sugar in our meals to stave off hunger and lose weight. I've been on the hunt for several mos now for a good protein bar because I usually don't have time to prepare meals that meet the criteria above, esp during the work day. Special K has a very good tasting bar but the amount of protein isn't that high. The muscle builder protein bars taste like chalk, are dry, and are not palatable at all.

Atkins has a number of bars to select from. Of them all, the Ch Chip Granola Bar currently has the highest amount of protein combined with the least amount of calories (e.g., their peanut butter choc bar has higher protein, but more cals, other bars may have less cals but lower protein.)

When you combine this with a cup of skim milk (which is the size of a paper dixie cup), you get 26g of protein! That's very good, if you weren't aware! (I've heard you should go for 25g of protein/meal). Then you get all the vitamins/calcium from the bar, plus the milk. Best of all, I'M NOT HUNGRY FOR ABOUT 3-4 HRS! I get all this for the price of 280 cals (200 for the bar+80 for the milk). There are hectic days where all I eat is 3 of these, w/ the milk, and I am seriously good to go. (That's 840 total cals for the day! 1200 recommended for women--less in than is expended=weight loss!). I don't feel deprived because the bar is decent tasting. (NOTE: one week when trying to lose extra weight faster so I could fit into a certain outfit, I ate nothing but these and I did feel deprived, but have found that a mix of these w/ a reasonable amount of other meals I like throughout the week is effective while not making me feel deprived.) A reviewer said they're dry and I sort of agree (however, nothing like the muscle builder bars), but that motivates me to drink all my milk, which since I was a kid, I haven't been good about and I know that as I age, that will come back to bite me. To me, it's a win-win.

I want to work out more but am SO busy and it's hard to fit in to my schedule. I resigned myself that I would just keep gradually gaining weight as I got older but I have actually lost weight in the past few mos I've been eating these bars religiously. I have no other explanation for it. I went to the dr early January and was heavier than ever. Cholesterol was way high. The only thing I did differently was eat more of the bars and less of my normal meals. I'm also trying to watch the sugar/carb intake, but I'm not fanatical about it. Yes, eating less of the bad meals is going to make a difference but the point is I switched them out for the bars so I wasn't starving myself and I still have energy. I went back to the dr. mid-March and was about 10+ lbs lighter. (Still don't know if the cholesterol improved.) I bought a good scale off Amazon and am keeping an eye on the weight and have lost a little more since.

One reviewer complained that the sugar alcohols in these basically made them a bad thing. I agree that the label is misleading because it prominently says 1g of sugar but the fine print on the nutritional breakdown tells you there's 9g of sugar alcohols. I did do a little research on this type of sweetener and the American Diabetes Assoc does support this as an alternative to sugar, but still in moderation. The trick is to divide the volume in half to do your carb counting. The reviewer also complained that maltitol is a particularly bad sugar alcohol and I didn't really see much evidence screaming that that's the case; however, I would question if the amount used in the bars is even worth getting in a tizzy about, the bars are not very sweet, mildly so. From what I can gather, the maltitol is used just in the ch chips. At any rate, use your own judgment.

I put a lot of time into this review because I want to spread the word. Maybe it will help someone else. I tried on some of my old clothes yesterday and they fit. Still not down to my optimal weight (about 10 lbs to go) but I've been eating these for a while and it's a sustainable meal plan. I'm not sick to death of them and my guess is because they're not awful tasting. Not awesome either but I'm still giving 5 stars because they accomplish a lot for me. (Based on taste alone, I'd give 3 stars)

One other tip, if I really need a sweet fix after dinner, I discovered the Atkins Choc Hazelnut Bars on Amazon's site. 6g of protein, 180 cals, and chock full of hazelnuts. Tastes similar to Ferraro Rocher candy. They are terrific tasting and very satisfying, check them out. I have not seen them in stores and when I tried to find them on Atkin's site, had trouble. I am worried they won't be around much longer.
