Fast, Tastey and Not too HotFeb 04, 2011
By Thomas E. Tweedel Based on the great results I have gotten with the other products in Asian Home Gourmets Line I was looking forward to the Vindaloo and I was not disappointed.
Vindaloo at the Indian restaurants as a fragrant tomato filled dish with lots of spice. Making it at home was a bit different. Rather than using chopped tomatoes and onion I used finely (food processor) chopped onions and tomato puree. When combined with sauce it has a paste like consistency that spreads the flavor all over.
The flavor is what I have come to expect from this product line, it is distinct, has some subtlety to it and is not too strong. The Vindaloo, which by their reconning is a 2 pepper dish was comfortably spicy. It had definite kick but wasn't a scorcher. The timid may find it too much, the heat mongers may find it tame. It seems to be somewhere in the middle for broadest appeal. I think most could give it a try and not regret that first bite (don't be scared off).
I'm looking forward to buying another pack and trying it out with a less blended base next time.
Is it as good as the Vindaloo I've had at nicer Indian restaurants? No. Does it make it easy to eat something tastey without have to go to different markets and stock stuff you normally don't use? Yes. That alone makes it a bargain.
Pick it up, its worth it.
