You just can't beat the Armour Dried Beef! This stuff is great! Yes, it has more sodium than a salt mine, and it is high in fats, while low in a lot of good stuff...but for high-energy back-packing, or long-duration camp outs, where meat-protein is hard to get enough of...you can't beat it! For breakfast, add some scrambled powdered eggs, make up some flour gravy...chip some of this up in it, and you have a rockin' breakfast! Excellent survival food...keep cases in the basement! Add rice, beans and you have another excellent evening camper special! I'm sure there are lots of things you can put this to work doing...but NEVER forget it when camping!

I have fond memories of a sauce with dried beef and veggies served over corn bread that I enjoyed as a child. This pack of dried beef is a start for me in recreating that old recipe. However, I did my usual -- reading the instructions after I made the dish - and discovered that this dried beef is extremely salty.
There is a note on the package that tells the user that they may wish to wash the salt off the beef before use. Don't ignore this warning (unless you're really into salt). Otherwise, you may find yourself with a dish that's just too salty to eat.
On the other hand, this is a good dried beef, and with appropriate washing, it is quite similar to what I remember enjoying. In addition, it's a good value, especially when you consider how far it can be stretched.
Five stars for taste, two stars for excessive salt - Four stars overall!

The pouch packaging is much more economical than the small jars. I bought 2 cases to make authentic SOS for our veterans at the Elks Annual Veterans Day Dinner. The quality is excellent which is typical of Armour products.
