Not Pure Vanilla Powder, deceptive name....Jun 24, 2008
By HeatherHH The full product name is actually "Pure Vanilla Flavor Powder." And there's a reason that that word flavor is included. Yes, the vanilla taste in this comes from vanilla beans, but they are far down on the list of ingredients.
Ingredients: A blend of dextrose, sugar, modified food starch, silicon dioxide (anticaking agent), and hydroalcoholic extractives of vanilla beans (from 20 fold extract).
As you can see, the vanilla is the 5th and last ingredient. This product is a suitable 1:1 substitute for imitation vanilla extract, but it is NOT a substitute for pure vanilla extract.
For a pure vanilla extract substitute, I would recommend Authentic Foods' Vanilla Powder which has natural vanilla bean extractives as the 1st ingredient, and has a wonderful smell and taste. It's not as expensive as you might think at first, because you only use 1/4 tsp powder instead of 1 tsp vanilla extract.

We primarily use this as a backup when out of the real thing. The nice thing about it as a substitute is the one to one ratio for use. I personally cannot tell the difference. We make out own vanilla extract with real beans, but it takes some time and this is very handy for such times. I would give it a 5 star, but it appears that the vanilla is way down the chain on the ingrediant list.
